Based on a leaked Kmart promotional ad, Joystiq is speculating that an Xbox 360 price cut is on the way. According to the ad, Microsoft's Xbox 360 Premium will sell for $299.99 beginning next month. How will this affect the Arcade and Elite models is anyone's guess. Rumor has it that Microsoft will be unveiling a new Xbox 360 SKU with a built-in 60GB HDD. If so, the Arcade may be getting bumped entirely, with the Premium taking its spot at $299.99 and the rumored 60GB model priced at $349.99, or perhaps MS will drop the price on the Arcade from $280 to $250 to take on the Wii directly, while the Premium will sell for $50 more than that?

Well, the speculation has once again rung true as Microsoft has announced it will be slipping a 60GB version of the 360 into that $349 price point. The old 20GB Pro version will be going for $299 until stocks run out, with the 60GB version coming along sometime early in August. This isn't the only Xbox news, with MS also announcing today that new programming from Universal and NBC Universal will be coming to Xbox Live, the dashboard will get an overhaul, and to top it all off the ability to store and play back games from the hard drive (like we have been used to doing with our PCs for years now). Not bad.

First, there was the leaked K-Mart circular revealing a sweet $50 price cut to the Xbox 360 Premium. Since then, the possibility has gotten firmer. Notably the Hollywood Reporter says that a "major retailer" and industry sources have informed them the cut will happen before E3 (though they call it the Pro). And usually reliable Ars Technica says the 20GB model is getting cheaped out to be replaced by that rumored 60GB model.

There have been rumours doing the rounds of an imminent price drop for Microsoft's Xbox 360 console. The hearsay might indeed be true as advertisements were recently spotted showing the Xbox 360 selling for about $50 less than it's $350 price tag: The Xbox 360 Pro is being sold at Target's brick-and-mortar stores for $299.99. This US price drop follows a similar move in the UK. Could an Indian price drop be far behind? Given the history of the Xbox 360 in India, it could very well be; hopefully, the console will reflect its new international price come Diwali, at the latest.

Erik J sends word that the rumored price cut on the 20-GB Xbox 360 is true, sort of. The Seattle PI's coverage says: "But the reduction isn't exactly what it might have appeared. In reality, it's more like a clearance sale, designed to empty the shelves for a new Xbox 360 with three times the digital storage, at the same price as before... As widely reported in advance, Microsoft is dropping the price of the 20-gigabyte Xbox 360 to $299.99. The unexpected twist: Sales of that model will end when current supplies run out."

The North American market has been the stronghold of Xbox 360. It was out far before the competition and as a native company many found Microsoft's new video game console to be a trustworthy product. Xbox 360 has been the most sold console in the USA since the launch, but Nintendo has ended that era according to NDP Research. After only 20 months on the market it has sold 10.9 million Nintendo Wii consoles throughout the USA. This is just thousands more than the number of Xbox 360 consoles sold in the USA, which has been on the market for 32 months. I think we can conclude that Nintendo was right not to get involved in the tech war between Microsoft and Sony.

Some leaky monkey at or near Microsoft has just dumped the new Xbox 360 Dashboard "Experience", also known as the fall update, onto the internet. For most of us, this means that that we've got new videos like the one above that illustrate some of the features we didn't get to see at E3. For people who have a hacked Xbox 360, it means they can actually install this and try it out for themselves, but risk brickage in the process. This reminds us of the story of the tortoise and the hare, except instead of animals you have super nerds that want to install stuff months too early. [Xhavok87 via Xbox Scene]
