Xbox 360 Pro price drop to hit July 13th: related news

Xbox 360 $299 Confirmed?

There have been rumours doing the rounds of an imminent price drop for Microsoft's Xbox 360 console. The hearsay might indeed be true as advertisements were recently spotted showing the Xbox 360 selling for about $50 less than it's $350 price tag: The Xbox 360 Pro is being sold at Target's brick-and-mortar stores for $299.99. This US price drop follows a similar move in the UK. Could an Indian price drop be far behind? Given the history of the Xbox 360 in India, it could very well be; hopefully, the console will reflect its new international price come Diwali, at the latest.

No other information appears to have accompanied the cut.

Xbox 360 Price Cuts Arrive in Australia, US Probably Following Soon

Normally we'd skip over Australia-only news, but the official Xbox 360 price cuts there most likely means those rumors of a drop in the US are pretty much locked in for sure (even if the European price reduction a few months ago didn't cross over). Kotaku says all three models got slashed, "with the Arcade down $50 to AUD$349, the Pro down a whopping $180 to AUD$499 and the Elite down $80 to AUD$649." With the new sticker of $349, the Xbox 360 Arcade is actually cheaper than the Wii, which is $400. Toilet flushing and the seasons aren't the only things backwards down there now. Based on a leaked Kmart promotional ad, Joystiq is speculating that an Xbox 360 price cut is on the way. According to the ad, Microsoft's Xbox 360 Premium will sell for $299.99 beginning next month. How will this affect the Arcade and Elite models is anyone's guess. Rumor has it that Microsoft will be unveiling a new Xbox 360 SKU with a built-in 60GB HDD. If so, the Arcade may be getting bumped entirely, with the Premium taking its spot at $299.99 and the rumored 60GB model priced at $349.99, or perhaps MS will drop the price on the Arcade from $280 to $250 to take on the Wii directly, while the Premium will sell for $50 more than that?

Xbox 360 20 GB Price Cut "While Supplies Last"

Erik J sends word that the rumored price cut on the 20-GB Xbox 360 is true, sort of. The Seattle PI's coverage says: "But the reduction isn't exactly what it might have appeared. In reality, it's more like a clearance sale, designed to empty the shelves for a new Xbox 360 with three times the digital storage, at the same price as before... As widely reported in advance, Microsoft is dropping the price of the 20-gigabyte Xbox 360 to $299.99. The unexpected twist: Sales of that model will end when current supplies run out."

Xbox 360 Arcade Will Drop To $199.99 On September 7th?

The battle for market share amongst the current generation of consoles is heating up, with the PS3 selling considerably better than it did at launch and the Wii and Xbox 360 still selling strongly. One of the biggest reasons Nintendo's console has gained such a big chunk of the market is that low price point. MS has been closing the gap in this regard and looks to go one step further with a possible price drop for the Arcade model (without a HDD) in early September. That would make the sub $200 Arcade the cheapest available console, with MS stating in the past that $199.99 is the sweet spot for console sales. Whether Microsoft will be making a profit at that price is hard to say (revisions to the console have brought production costs down, but maybe not that considerably), as is whether that price would last if introduced.
