Wii Motion Plus Delivers Better Motion Feedback At A Cost: related news

better cost delivers feedback motion motion plus wii
Both Engadget and Gizmodo have had some hands on experience with the new MotionPlus accessory for the Wii remote that claims to deliver 1:1 motion tracking. Opinion seems to be divided, with Engadget taking the view that the new accessory doesn't add much that the original remote couldn't already do. Gizmodo are wholly more positive in their first impressions, claiming it finally delivers the kind of motion response that was expected when the Wii first launched. Both sites express concern about the added cost, as well as the fact that a lot of new games are going to make this a required purchase.

Ubisoft's Alain Corre has explained that, just as Red Steel was one of the first games out to take advantage of the Nintendo Wii (for better or worse), the sequel to that game will be one of the first games to take advantage of the new Wii hardware - the Wii Motion Plus.

So Nintendo has revealed its Wii Motion Plus, a small, roughly cubic add-on that fits onto the bottom end of the Wiimote and brings about a new level of precision as far as motion-detection is concerned. But how does it work, and what exactly are the implications for both gamers and developers?

Here at the E3 2008 games expo, I got the chance to spend some quality time with early builds of Nintendo's latest 'Wii Series' games: Wii Sports Resort (a sequel to Wii Sports) and Wii Music (once planned as a Wii console launch title). The early verdict: Both deliver the irreverent fun you'd expect, coupled with some crafty control methods that you perhaps wouldn't. Both are sure to be popular – even Wii Music – though I'm still not 100 percent sold on it.

We have seen different versions of motion sensing controllers trying to mimick Wii style gaming. But Ultimotion from Jakks Pacific not only enables play like Wii but has also got its own version of Wii Sport. Unlike Wii, this is not a console but is something like ‘plug n play’ which fires up the games as soon as it is attached to the TV. Included games are bowling, golf, tennis, baseball and football each included with an accessory of its own for more realistic feeling.

A handheld device manufacturer claims it is the rightful owner of the technology that powers Nintendo's wildly popular, motion-sensitive Wii game controller. Hillcrest Labs is suing the video game giant for infringing four of its patents. Nintendo has so far not commented on the matter, saying it hasn't received any legal notifications on the matter.

Some additional information on the free Wii promotion that insiders leaked last week now comes via more official channels: From today until August 17, 2008, new customers who sign up for Comcast Preferred Plus or Premier Triple Play package will receive a complimentary Wii system. A Comcast insider also tells me that potential Wii warriors will need to pass a certain credit screening threshold "to be determined by market"; if they don't pass, they will be required to pay the $250 Wii deposit to sign up for the Nintendo Wii offer.

It has come to our attention that certain parties on the Internet want you to believe that there are no decent games coming out on the Wii. Kotaku's pirate ear to the ground is picking up from sources that the Live dashboard will be updated with a spanky new interface option: what Crecente says is a Minority Report-like 3D interface that'll make use of that long-rumored motion controller. (In addition to those 80 functions that didn't materialize in a Spring Update.) The "motion controls will allow users to sort of slide through the different levels of this floating menu system." Sounds slick, it was taking me too long to flip through all those blades. [Kotaku]

This Wii Sqweeze demo by InterAction Labs supposedly does for your upper body what Wii Fit does for the lower body of the 10 people who actually managed to find one. The thing is essentially two squeezable grips (exactly like the kind you can get at sports stores now) that correspond to claws and bows and other activities on screen. It's not a real Wii game now, but just a PC demo running off a Wiimote tied via USB to a Wii. Could it be a real Wii game? Sure, but unless it's got Nintendo's name and advertising attached to it, we don't think it's going to do that well. [Exergamelab]
