I’ve always taken a hard line on what video games are not. In my opinion, games are not art, and video games are certainly not a sport. I admit that games are an excellent form of competition, and I don’t even have a problem with the concept of “professional gamers.” Having been to a few tournaments, I can understand the skill that players need to have to reach this level.

The W3C has decided to take a look at Web video with the aim of making it a first class citizen. This is good news, as up until now, video (and it's companion, audio) have been difficult to place on Web pages, and have caused problems like slow downloads and difficult compatibility. I put up a video the other day, and it streamed great on my computer, but on my brother's Linux box, he had to download the whole thing before it would even play. And he couldn't even download the first version of the video that I made. So, if you've had trouble adding video to your Web pages, you're not the only one. Maybe someday we won't be forced to use the deprecated embed tag, and when we do use the object tag our videos will play.

I totally agree with your view on video games. I think the problem is that most parents don't have the experience you and I have with video games and rely on (false) common sense. Because of this lack of education, they are swayed by people like the Marine who writes the anti-video game books, Jack Thompson and conservative media, which is a shame.

I am not a big sports fan and thus I really don’t play all that many sports video games. However, right now I’m watching a quite a bit of sports on TV, and my favorite video game this summer has been Sega’s Beijing 2008. As I ran track and field in my younger days and still enjoy cycling, I find the Olympics video games to be a lot of fun. Likewise, as my father’s side of the family is of Romanian descent I think gymnastics is almost hardwired into my DNA — and even if the sport on TV bores me, I find the game version strangely compelling!

Recently, we had a story about a lawyer who was suing a bunch of folks for uploading a pinball video game, with some questionable statements about how piracy was destroying the PC gaming industry. Of course, that's not actually true. An excellent post by Cord Blomquist explains how the PC gaming business is actually growing, but in different ways than most people expect. Sure, it may be harder to find certain types of video games that you see on consoles these days, but other games are thriving. But they're doing so by adopting different business models that aren't so impacted by unauthorized distribution. For example, they involve online services (ongoing MMO type games, where the payment is for service, rather than the software) or they focus on making money through other means, such as advertising or upselling premium editions.

While there are many out here, not all people like the subscription models, so they play free mmorpg games. They are not exactly free because they all have shops that can offer you an advantage if you buy special items from there, but it’s not mandatory and in some, it’s not necessary at all if you know what you’re doing.
