UK P2P Fight Brewing

forunder writes "Zeropaid has been covering a very hot topic going on in the UK right now. The government, prodded by entertainment lobbyists, has gotten six UK ISPs to agree to help police piracy on their networks. A leaked government letter says they are looking to cut internet piracy by 80%. In the same week Microsoft released a study which found that some 54% of UK file sharers are between 11-16. The UK's Green Party has already spoken up, calling the new policies an 'Attack on Civil Liberties.'"

Game publishers bring RIAA-style anti-P2P tactics to UK

While the US has long been the hotbed of anti-piracy lawsuits by big associations like the RIAA, game publishers in the United Kingdom are apparently raring to get in on the action as well. A large-scale, coordinated attack on piracy has been launched by a band of big UK game publishers, as they begin to hunt down pirates and give them an ultimatum: pay up or go to court.

"War On Terror" Board Game Confiscated In UK

An anonymous reader writes "The board game The War On Terror is a satirical game in which George Bush's 'Axis of Evil' is reduced to a spinner in the middle of the board, which determines which player is designated a terrorist state. That person then has to wear a balaclava (included in the box set) with the word 'Evil' stitched onto it. Kent police said they had confiscated the game because the balaclava 'could be used to conceal someone's identity or could be used in the course of a criminal act.' Balaclavas are freely sold all over the place in the area." Schneier has blogged this stupidity, of course.

Violent Video Gaming Comes To the Wii

TuringTest writes "In an attempt to bring the Wii closer to the hardcore gamer's taste, Sega is preparing to release MadWorld, a violent 'hack and slash' game. This has brought attention from family-conscious lobbies: 'The decision to release a violent game on a console which has based its reputation on family fun has shocked anti-violence pressure groups. Mediawatch-UK, Britain's longest-running pressure group campaigning for decency in TV, films and games, said MadWorld will "spoil" the Wii.' The game features black & white cel-shaded graphics, except for the blood blobs which are in brilliant red. MadWorld is announced to be released in early 2009."

iPhone Roundup: Apple Releases Software Update; Turkcell To Sell iPhone 3G in Turkey

This afternoon Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) pulled the wraps off the iPhone 2.0.2 firmware update, its latest update for the device. Aside from “bug fixes” and tangential improvements it doesn’t appear to resolve the iPhone 3G’s connectivity issues, yet some are still hopeful. The jury’s still out on whether the new device’s troubles are linked to a faulty chipset or network problems at AT&T (NYSE: T), but more importantly can it even be fixed with a software update? Details on the update are still scant at this point, but the 242 megabit update is available at iTunes for those hoping to see an end to all those dropped calls. Wishful thinking or has Apple nipped this mess in the bud?

She won't be the last person to face demands of payment, as more game companies are beginning an earnest counterattack against software piracy in the UK.
