Nanotechnology? What are you talking about?

Trying to define nanotechnology is like the famous tale of the blind men and the elephant: Six blind men were asked to determine what an elephant looked like by feeling different parts of the elephant's body. The blind man who feels a leg says the elephant is like a pillar; the one who feels the tail says the elephant is like a rope; the one who feels the trunk says the elephant is like a tree branch; the one who feels the ear says the elephant is like a hand fan; the one who feels the belly says the elephant is like a wall; and the one who feels the tusk says the elephant is like a solid pipe. It's the same with nanotechnology – it is different things to different people.

Decoded Platypus Genome Spells Out 'Hybrid'

The duck-billed platypus looks and acts like an animal with an identity crisis. It swims a bit like a duck and walks like one, too (on those webbed little feet), but it's certainly no bird. It lays eggs, as if a bird or reptile, yet it nurses its young like the mammal that it is. Now, it turns out the animal looks like a hybrid even at the most minute level, its DNA. Along with today's announcement that the platypus's genome has been sequenced comes the revelation that its genes reflect its odd ancestry.

CIA Details Its Wikipedia-like Tools For Analysts

hhavensteincw writes "If you think selling Web 2.0 in your organization is hard, some early backers of a Wikipedia-like project at the Central Intelligence Agency were called traitors and told they "would get someone killed" by their efforts. But Intellipedia — the CIA's version of Wikipedia — now is so heavily used by analysts that the agency is using it in its security briefings, according to two of the CIA employees who work on the project. Intellipedia has been expanded since it was first launched so that now it boasts its own YouTube-like channel for video and Flickr-like photo sharing as well as a wiki where workers can debate different intel information."

Music sales through Rock Band compete with iTunes - and sometimes they win

Music sales through Rock Band compete with iTunes - and sometimes they win As music-based games like Guitar Hero and Rock Star continue to enjoy strong sales, they've also created an interesting niche market for music sales. In fact the two titles have reportedly sold more than 25 million downloads combined. While most of the songs which can be downloaded for each game are familiar radio staples, a handful are new or relatively new tracks that aren't nearly as well known. You might think that's a recipe for slow sales on the newer titles, but that's not necessarily the case.

Penny Arcade Game Sees Record Breaking Numbers

Kotaku is reporting that the new Penny Arcade game is showing record breaking numbers, earning $330,000 in the first three days, surpassing previous record holder Worms HD. Penny Arcade's Mike Krahulik was very pleased with the result saying: "Given that our price point was double the other games on that list I'm pretty f***ing happy. We fully expected some people to complain about the $20 price tag but we honestly felt like our game was worth it. Pricing something like this is tricky. Obviously you have to look at the length of time it will take someone to complete the game but you also need to factor in the quality of the experience."

Report: New York City not welcoming to game developers

Even though the video game industry generated nearly $40 billion last year, a new study by the Center for Urban Future has pointed out that New York City has a startling lack of game developers housed in or around Manhattan. Even though other cities like Montreal, San Francisco, and Los Angeles have proved that game development is an incredibly lucrative field that relies on experts in a variety of technical skills, most of New York's computer experts instead work in the financial sector for money management firms and the like.

First Details of New Bond Game Released

CVG is reporting that the first tidbits of Activision's new Bond game have been detailed in GamesMaster magazine. Pulling from both Casino Royale and the Quantum of Solace films, the new game will feature mostly FPS gameplay with some third-person elements. "GM says that the core FPS gameplay is broken up with third-person elements, supposedly to remind you that you're 'being' Bond, which sounds like an idea straight from the 'brand' department. The mag compares the game's cover system to that of GTA IV, where the camera pulls out to an external view so you can see Bond on screen against the wall with his enemies in the background. A bit like erm, every cover system then."

Cocoa-Like JavaScript Framework Announced

TwilightSentry writes "Ars Technica reports that a group of developers has created an Objective-C-like extension to JavaScript along with a class library mirroring Cocoa. They've used these to release an impressive demo app called 280 Slides. The article notes, 'Whereas SproutCore seeks to "embrace the platform" by giving a Cocoa-like development model for developers already using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to make a web app, Cappuccino and Objective-J take an entirely different approach. "Since Cappuccino runs entirely on the client, at run time, we're never actually generating HTML or CSS," says Boucher. "When you build an application in Cappuccino, you don't need to ever deal with HTML or CSS. All of your interface is designed in Objective-J and Cappuccino.
