Strong video game sales aid HMV: related news

Video Game Sales Soar 53%

July 18, 2008 (FinancialWire) US video game retail sales soared 53% in June as gamers bought titles for Nintendo s Wii, Microsoft s (NASDAQ: MSFT) (Current Market Cap: US$256.30 Bil.) Xbox 360 and Sony s (NYSE: SNE) Playstation 3. Total sales of video game hardware, software and accessories hit $1.69 billion during the month, up from $1.1 billion in the same period a year earlier, according to data from market researcher NPD Group. According to an analyst the video games industry continued to outperform as people turned to more in-home entertainment due to a difficult economic environment. The portable Nintendo DS was the best-selling gaming system during the month, with 783,000 units, while the Wii sold 666,700 units, besting the PS3 and the Xbox 360.

Video Game Sales Rise 28% in July

The latest video game sales figures show a 28% increase in sales compared to last year at the same time. The PS3 sold 10% more consoles this month than the Xbox 360 and the Wii outsold the PS3 and 360 combined with over 550,000 units. Overall video game hardware, software and accessories for the month of July totaled $1.19B.

The Entertainment Merchants Association released the results of a recent study that says video game sales overtook DVD sales in 2007, and by a significant margin too. Video game sales were almost $19 billion while DVD sales were $16 billion and box office numbers were $9 billion. Obviously combined the “Hollywood” numbers are better than gaming but that could easily change this year.

Russian search engine group Yandex has launched the public beta of Yandex.Video. Service users can search and share videos clips online, as well as view the most popular videos. Yandex.Video currently searches about twenty video hosting services including youtube.com, rutube.ru, video.mail.ru, smotri.com and myvi.ru. The service's video search method is based on analysis of names, tags, descriptions and other video clip attributes. Search results are ranked according to user ratings. Yandex.Video continuously updates the most popular videos shown on its front page, as it receives information about new comments and new videos posted in blogs from Yandex's Blog Search service. Service users can upload an unlimited amount of video files and create their own favourite lists.
