July 18, 2008 (FinancialWire) US video game retail sales soared 53% in June as gamers bought titles for Nintendo s Wii, Microsoft s (NASDAQ: MSFT) (Current Market Cap: US$256.30 Bil.) Xbox 360 and Sony s (NYSE: SNE) Playstation 3. Total sales of video game hardware, software and accessories hit $1.69 billion during the month, up from $1.1 billion in the same period a year earlier, according to data from market researcher NPD Group. According to an analyst the video games industry continued to outperform as people turned to more in-home entertainment due to a difficult economic environment. The portable Nintendo DS was the best-selling gaming system during the month, with 783,000 units, while the Wii sold 666,700 units, besting the PS3 and the Xbox 360.

The latest video game sales figures show a 28% increase in sales compared to last year at the same time. The PS3 sold 10% more consoles this month than the Xbox 360 and the Wii outsold the PS3 and 360 combined with over 550,000 units. Video game sales were almost $19 billion while DVD sales were $16 billion and box office numbers were $9 billion.
