PSP Fanboy just learned that Sony's discontinuing their 2200mAh PSP battery pack, an official aftermarket addon that would allow you to game for up to 12 hours or so. What's the deal? We're not sure, but someone from Sony said they're looking at other ways to "service the consumer," which might say to us that they're looking at ways to extend battery life without making the back of the PSP bulge out in an unseemly manner. And just when we learned how to hack your PSP for homebrew apps too. [PSP Fanboy]

The prospect of a PSP phone looks even more likely now that we've seen Sony's patent for a touchscreen handheld. The patent describes a device with "digital tactile pixels" that respond to touch and give feedback via vibration. This patent was submitted by Sony Computer Entertainment, the group behind PlayStation, and not Ericsson, like the last alleged PSP phone patent. The mystery device is covered to play games and music and browse the web, but also make phone calls, so what else could it be? [patent via Tech Digest]

PSP Firmware 4.05 - Yup, another PSP firmware update's on the horizon! Exciting, no? This one's due "soon", and seems designed solely to spite Robbie Bach and his anti-PSP-as-a-music-player sentiments, as it's geared towards making your PSP music-playing experience just that little bit more pleasurable, which it will do by adding some new visualizers for music playback, "among other features".

PSP modder jube808 has equipped his PSP with a DIY touchscreen, as part of his efforts to add features he feels Sony dropped the ball on with his beloved handheld. The on-screen keyboard looks pretty responsive, and can be used with fingers or a stylus. Such a mod is probably making PSP homebrewers salivate with PSP/DS hybrid potential. Another video has a closer look at the whole rig.

It's all about the cameras today with Sony leading out two new compact piccie grabbers from their photographic stables. Yeah, that caused a little fun for a while.

We knew the PSP-3000 was on the way, but now Sony has made it official. We don't have a full spec sheet yet, but the big two updates are going to be a new, brighter screen ("highest-level contrast ratio, response time, and wider color gamut possible on a portable LCD screen" Sony claims) and an integrated microphone (making those impromptu Skype chats a whole lot more practical). No word on US release yet, but the PSP-3000 will be available in Europe on October 15th for €199. Hopefully we'll have a better picture for you soon, but it looks a lot like the existing PSPs. scriptgalleryPost("psp3000", 6, "");UPDATE: It's coming to the US on Oct 14, and it will hit with a new pack, click through for the update: [Kotaku]

It is no doubt PSP is a great game player. But it is also a very good entertainment device which can be used for playing music. Assume you have some songs on your iTunes and are trying to figure out how to put them on your PSP. You copy and paste them in the PSP music folder, however, the PSP doesn't recognize the songs as music at all. So what's wrong? Don't worry! This guide will help you out of the trouble.

With Sony's 3.93 system update (check under the settings menu of your PSP to download it from any Wi-Fi environment), Skype is now available on all slim model PSPs. After you've installed the update, look under the Network menu to find a Skype icon. As long as you are within a Wi-Fi area, you can sign in to or start up a Skype account, then make free calls to anyone else on the Skype network. Sony will start selling a Skype headset kit in late April, but if you already have a PSP headset and the remote connector from the PSP-2000 headphones, you can start dialing now.

It looks like the Sony-Ericsson W350a is coming to AT&T later this year. One of the handsets has appeared mysteriously on eBay with AT&T branding. It's not a super-new phone, but the fact that it's got the AT&T logo is something interesting. Was this a demo phone? A loaner from SE? Will AT&T carry the phone in the near future? We don't know, but Sony-Ericsson fans have just perked up their ears. [PhoneNews]

Sony is allegedly readying a third iteration of the PlayStation Portable that would reflect changes to the PSP itself as well as its relationship with the PlayStation 3, if a set of leaked shots from China prove accurate. The device known so far as the PSP-3000 would incorporate a built-in microphone below the screen that would make it more immediately useful for Skype calls as well as in-game chat; it would also have redesigned buttons, including a home button relabeled with the PS logo to bring it into line with the PS3.
