Sony Shows Latest PS3 Home, Now Recruiting Beta Testers

Sony is now recruiting beta testers for PlayStation Home, the virtual world that PS3 users will use to interact with each other—and try to have virtual sex. They will invite 10,000 users from today to August 11, with the beta starting later in the month. The beta will include only a limited number of places, including a Game Venue developed in collaboration with Namco, where you would be able to play Pac-Man, Galaga, and DigDug. Sony's looking for members of the PlayStation community who'd like to take part in beta tests for upcoming PS3 titles. According to the company, "you do not need to technically minded"; they're looking for a variety of people with differing amounts of technical expertise to help them test the games. That..kind of sounds like you need to be technically minded. But anyway, they do require flexibility. No, contorting yourself into a pretzel will not help you with this, they simply mean you'll have to give up some evenings to help out with certain "Test Nights" and general testing.

Sony Releases 2.41 PS3 Firmware

Bad news spreads fast in today's world, so when Sony released the 2.40 PS3 firmware update last week it wasn't long before reports of problems started to emerge, with some being unlucky enough to brick their console with the update. Sony therefore made the decision to take down the 2.40 update while they ironed out the problems, with the result being today's 2.41 firmware. Sony are now confident that the issues with 2.40 have been resolved, and have extended their apologies to the Playstation community for any inconvenience caused. 2.41 doesn't add any additional features over 2.40, and Sony hasn't said what it will do about the consoles that were bricked by the 2.40 firmware yet.

Sony is inviting gamers to its new Home -- while it's still under construction. In a post on the PlayStation blog today, PlayStation Home director Jack Buser confirmed that Sony will be expanding the closed beta test of its PlayStation 3 online service starting at the end of the month.

Sony PS3's VidZone Service Gives You Free Music and Video

Sony's just announced a video service for their PS3 called VidZone, which somehow offers up free music and videos, albeit only in PAL regions for the time being. It'll allow you to streaming unlimited music on demand for free, but it's unclear whether it'll be ad-supported, or whether the catalog will be full of only Sony BMG tracks, or whether these are horrible tracks that nobody wants to hear anyway. Sony says the PlayStation 3...is just getting started. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. After a less than stellar start....Sony says its PlayStation 3 game console is gaining momentum.....and may eventually sell more than the 140 million units achieved by the PlayStation 2. It's all about the cameras today with Sony leading out two new compact piccie grabbers from their photographic stables. Part of the Cyber-shot range, they go by the names of the Sony Cyber-shot T700 and the Sony Cyber-shot T77 and just to confuse matters even more, Sony Ericsson brought out the their new T700 mobile today. Sony: No price cuts for PS3

With the Xbox 360 Pro 20GB widely rumored to sell for $299.99 beginning this Sunday, many gamers are wondering if Sony plans to respond to MSFT by reducing prices on their own PS3 console. According to Sony's CFO, the answer is no: "This year, our strategy is not to sell more quantity for PS3 but to concentrate on profitability," Oneda told a forum in Singapore. "Our plan is not to reduce the price."

Sony Professional Solutions appoints channel development manager

Sony Ireland has appointed David Byrne to the position of channel development manager for video-conferencing and CCTV within its business division, Sony Professional Solutions. David joins Sony Ireland Ltd from Digicom where he held the position of corporate sales - audio-visual consultant. Sony's Big Plans For MMO Gaming On The PLAYSTATION 3

Sony is planning on bringing gamers together in a bigger way than ever before. The PlayStation E3 2008 press conference introduced large scale multiplayer gaming plans for the PS3 with MAG, short for "Massive Action Game." The game is touting 256 player battles. Sony opens applications for PlayStation Home beta testers in Japan

PlayStation Home has been long in coming thanks to delays and tweaking, but Sony Computer Entertainment is promising good things are in store for the PlayStation Network's upcoming community-based service. From today until August 11th, the games division is accepting applications for Home's closed beta. The catch is that the applications are currently open for users in Japan only.

Want To Get In On The PlayStation Home Beta?

Sony still isn't ready to open its online virtual world, PlayStation Home, to the masses, but this post on the official PlayStation Blog announces their next planned expansion of the closed beta test at the end of the month. All current beta testers will be included in the expanded beta with additional slots being opened up for an influx of new gamers to get in on the action (or inaction, since decorating your apartment and playing chess doesn't seem very action-y).

The PS3 is More Than a Toy With Fedora
