Sony sets final sales target

Sony's console chief executive Kaz Hirai has ambitions, and big ones: he's set a target of selling 150 million PlayStation 3's (long-term), aiming to surpass the PS2's record of 140m (the PS1 reached 102m). Currently, the console is barely one-tenth of the way there, with sales of 12.85m as of March. But Sony, bless their little hearts, are willing to face the cold:

PS3 Now EA's Single Biggest Seller

This time last year, sales of PS3 games accounted for only $13 million of EA’s total net revenue. But this time this year? PS3 games account for $139 million in sales. Which is a 969% increase, and is miles ahead of 360 sales, which "only" made the company $81 million. Don’t bother asking us how this happened, we have no idea. As for the other systems, the PC was the second-biggest earner at $86 million (perhaps contributing to EA Sport’s about-face), with PS2 sales just behind the 360 at $79 million. Sony rising: PS3 opens up lead on Xbox 360 in July

The July NPD sales numbers have been released, and as always, Nintendo dominates in every way, while Microsoft and Sony battle it out for a distant second place. The industry continues to see large growth year over year, with a 35 percent jump in sales for the year to date, and an impressive 48 percent jump in software sales alone. With the large difference between the sales of Nintendo's hardware and software and its two main competitors, one could easily make an argument that Nintendo is to be thanked for much of that growth.

Sony Releases 2.41 PS3 Firmware

Bad news spreads fast in today's world, so when Sony released the 2.40 PS3 firmware update last week it wasn't long before reports of problems started to emerge, with some being unlucky enough to brick their console with the update. Sony therefore made the decision to take down the 2.40 update while they ironed out the problems, with the result being today's 2.41 firmware. Sony are now confident that the issues with 2.40 have been resolved, and have extended their apologies to the Playstation community for any inconvenience caused. 2.41 doesn't add any additional features over 2.40, and Sony hasn't said what it will do about the consoles that were bricked by the 2.40 firmware yet.
