40 ps3 firmware issues pulled thanks v2
Sony's well-anticipated firmware update version 2.40 for the PlayStation 3 went live for download yesterday, bringing with it in-game XrossMediaBar (XMB) access and Trophies for supporting PS3 game titles. Unfortunately, the update process did not appear to be as silky smooth as it was for previous firmware releases, and technical issues soon reared their ugly heads.

Bad news spreads fast in today's world, so when Sony released the 2.40 PS3 firmware update last week it wasn't long before reports of problems started to emerge, with some being unlucky enough to brick their console with the update. Sony therefore made the decision to take down the 2.40 update while they ironed out the problems, with the result being today's 2.41 firmware. Sony are now confident that the issues with 2.40 have been resolved, and have extended their apologies to the Playstation community for any inconvenience caused. 2.41 doesn't add any additional features over 2.40, and Sony hasn't said what it will do about the consoles that were bricked by the 2.40 firmware yet.

Last week's release of the version 2.40 firmware update for PlayStation 3 consoles was met with short-lived fanfare, as Sony Computer Entertainment would soon pull it from general distribution due to various technical issues it caused across a spread of PS3 models. The v2.40 update promised both in-game XMB (XrossMediaBar) access as well as the new Trophy reward system for supporting PS3 software in one fell swoop.

Hi, everyone. As many of you know, we released PS3 firmware update v2.40 last week, but had to take it offline temporarily because, for a limited number of users, the XMB wouldn’t display after the update was installed. We’ve been able to fix the problem, and I’m happy to report that firmware update v2.41 will be released shortly. We want to extend our apologies to the PlayStation community for any inconvenience. Now we’ll be looking forward to seeing everyone online and racking up those trophies!

For those of you waiting on the new PS3 2.41 firmware to replace last week’s botched 2.40 version, you may not have to wait much longer. According to Sony’s customer service, firmware version 2.41 should be out “midweek.” This is good news for people like me with 2.40 installed and no issues but not so good news for those people with bricked PS3s.

An anonymous reader writes "Earlier today Sony launched firmware V2.40 for the PS3 which is mandatory for online play. To my horror after installing the update my console wouldn't boot, and this appears to be a not uncommon problem affecting all ages and models of PS3s. Although there is rampant fanboy denial over at the official Playstation forums, the Kotaku article details the issue and has a suggested solution if you don't mind yanking your PS3's hard drive."

In my excitement over the release of the new Playstation 3 firmware, 2.40, which includes in-game XMB support and trophies, I forgot what I usually recommend to people: don't jump on it (an OS update, a patch, a firmware update) until you see what happens to others who upgrade.
