Crytek to Abandon PC Exclusive Games

There has been plenty of talk about the poor sales PC games are experiencing these days. On the contrary, blockbuster console games sell easily million of copies within days after launch. The latest PC game developer to learn this lesson is Crytek, which decided that Crysis should be a PC exclusive. It seems, this will be their last PC-only game. The reason? Crytek president Cevat Yerli explains:

AMD Wants to Standardize PC Gaming

Vigile writes "Even though PC gaming has a very devout fan-base it is impossible to not see the many benefits that console gaming offers: faster loads, better compatibility and more games that fully utilize the hardware to name a few. AMD just launched a new initiative called AMD GAME! that attempts to bring some of these benefits to PC games as well. AMD will be certifying hardware for two different levels of PC gaming standards, testing compatibility with a host of current and future PC titles as well as offering up AMD GAME! ready components or pre-built systems from partners."

Video Game Industry Predictions for 2012

PricewaterhouseCoopers is about to release a new industry report titled "Global Entertainment and Media Outlook: 2008-2012". The overall video game industry is expected to grow 10.3% annually but console games will continue to dominate sales which will grow at a healthy 6.9% per year. Online games are predicted to see the highest annual growth rate of 16.9% but will still have a way to go to catch up to console sales. Video game advertising, a relatively new entry, is also predicted to have strong growth at 16.7% annually. PC games will continue to be the industry laggard with an expectation of decreased sales between now and 2012. They are predicting an annual growth rate of negative 1.2%. This news doesn't bode well for hard-core PC gamers as this will likely lead to a reduced investment in quality titles.

Next up to blame piracy for PC gaming's decline: Peter Moore

Retail sales of PC games aren't what they used to be, although the indie game market and online gaming is still going strong. The reason for this, many in the industry seem to think, is piracy. In January, a community manager for Infinity Ward wrote about piracy on his blog when talking about the sales numbers of the PC version of Call of Duty 4. More recently, Crytek spoke about the effects of piracy when releasing PC-only games. Now, Peter Moore is getting in on the action, and spoke to GameDaily about canceling Madden '09 for PCs.
