Several Nintendo Controllers may be Banned

Nintendo may soon have to halt sales of its Wii Classic Controller, GameCube WaveBird, and the standard GameCube controller. A suit was brought against Nintendo by Anascape for violating its patent for a "six degrees of freedom interface device." Sony has been licensing the technology since 2004 and Microsoft settled out of court. Nintendo, however, decided to go to trial, and the judge ruled that Nintendo was indeed in violation of the patent and not only owes $21 million, but may also have to halt sales of the three aforementioned controllers. Nintendo has appealed the ruling, so for now, they can continue to sell the controllers. However, if you've been considering purchasing one, you may want to do so sooner rather than later.

Nintendo Loses Controller Patent Lawsuit

kryogen1x alerts us to coverage at 1up indicating that Nintendo controller may soon become scarce — Nintendo lost in court to Anascape over analog sticks in their Wii and GameCube controllers. This isn't the first time the big manufacturers have been targeted in lawsuits involving features in their controllers. From the article: "The lawsuit concerns the analog sticks in the Classic Controller and GameCube controllers, which Texas-based Anascape Ltd. claims to hold a patent on that Nintendo violated. The court has ruled in favor of Anascape, and US District Judge Ron Clark has rejected Nintendo's request for a new trial. As a result, Clark said he will put a ban on the sale of the controllers (which includes sales of GameCube systems) starting tomorrow, July 23, unless Nintendo posts a bond or puts royalties into an escrow account.

Lytic Transglycosylase MltB of Escherichia coli and Its Role in Recycling of Peptidoglycan Strands of Bacterial Cell Wall

The cell wall is an indispensable structure for the survival of bacteria and a target for antibiotics. Peptidoglycan is the major constituent of the cell wall, which is comprised of backbone repeats of N-acetylglucosamine (NAG) and N-acetylmuramic acid (NAM). A peptide stem is appended to the NAM unit, which in turn experiences cross-linking with a peptide from another peptidoglycan in the final steps of cell wall assembly. In the normal course of bacterial growth, as much as 60% of the parental cell wall is recycled, a process that is not fully understood. A polymeric cell wall is fragmented by the family of lytic transglycosylases, and certain key fragments are transported to the cytoplasm for recycling. The genes for the six known lytic transglycosylases of Escherichia coli were cloned, and the enzymes were purified in this study.

Not from the creators of WALL-E: Pictor, the wall painting robot

The day when robots take over all of mankind's most tedious chores has just got a little bit closer. The Pictor wall painting robot will climb walls all by itself and paint them using various science-fiction sounding techniques. It'll apparently use a "cleaning laser" to prepare the wall for painting, then use an "airless nozzle" to paint the wall - which apparently results in no "atomised spray". And apparently that is a good thing.

Nintendo can't fight off patent metroids, faces injunction

It seems that gaming controllers are the hot target for patent lawsuits, and patent holders are finding litigation a sound strategy. After Sony lost its case against Immersion and, along with Microsoft, coughed up a hefty sum of money, as well as also licensing the technology for use in the Dual Shock 3 controller, the other sharks had to have smelled the blood in the water. In August of last year a company called Anascape brought suit against Nintendo and Microsoft, claiming the companies violated an array of patents. While Microsoft settled the case for an undisclosed amount, Nintendo pressed on and the jury awarded Anascape $21 million in damages last year. The judge has now refused to grant Nintendo a new trial, threatening to halt sales of GameCube controllers, Wavebirds, and Wii Classic controllers until Nintendo puts the money in e
