Intel questions AMD spinoff plan: related news

Intel questions AMD spinoff plan

As many of you probably know, AMD and Intel share a broad cross license agreement that covers tech such as AMD's 64-bit instruction set, Intel's MMX and SSE, and most importantly, Intel's x86 license, which allows AMD to produce x86 compatible CPUs such as Athlon and Phenom.

AMD: company split does not violate Intel patents

One day after Intel voiced concerns over patent violations, AMD has made an announcement on Thursday hoping to put them to rest. AMD previously said it will split its operations and enter into a joint manufacturing venture, prompting the worries from Intel. Intel said it would review its processor licensing agreement with AMD, though AMD maintains there is no need, as the new deal will not violate any agreements between the two. The two chipmakers currently have a deal in place that has AMD pay Intel royalties in exchange for use of its x86 chip instruction set.

AMD, Red Hat Demo VM Migration Between AMD, Intel Servers

Even as virtualization management tools have improved steadily this year, enterprises remain stuck with an unpleasant reality about their ability to move virtual machines between physical servers. If you're doing a live migration of the VM, you can't move a VM from an AMD-based physical server to an Intel-based one, or vice versa. It's a big problem. Virtualization giant VMware has had little power to correct the matter without help from the two chip rivals. And Intel, to date, has not shown much interest in changing the situation. But today, AMD has taken an intriguing step, demonstrating with Red Hat the ability to do a live migration of a VM between AMD- and Intel-based physical servers.

AMD Says Manufacturing Deal Does Not Violate Intel Processor Patents

The day after AMD announced a significant deal that will spin off its manufacturing facilities into a new joint venture company, AMD is defending its licensing agreement with Intel. In the wake of the deal, Intel said it would review its processor licensing agreement with AMD to ensure the deal does not violate any patent agreements. An AMD spokesman said the deal does not impact the chip licensing agreement with Intel.

Intel Says AMD Split Violates License Agreement

AMD and Intel are rivals in the marketplace when it comes to x86 compatible CPUs and graphics processors. AMD and Intel have a cross-license agreement in place that allow AMD to use Intel IP to build x86 compatible processors.

Intel worried patents hurt by AMD split...

Intel today said it was concerned its patents might be at risk as a result of AMD's manufacturing split. The former company licenses its x86 chip architecture and other key technologies to AMD and has "serious questions" about whether those licenses will be honored if AMD's division into design and manufacturing companies is approved, according to Intel spokesman Chuck Mulloy.

AMD, Red Hat Show Virtual Server Move From Intel Server To AMD

AMD and Red Hat have demonstrated the first instance of migrating virtual machines between Intel-based and AMD-based servers, but cautioned that the capability is still far from ready for commercialization.

MuleSource Integrates Intel XML Software Suite

MuleSource announced a collaboration with Intel Corporation to deliver a new offering that provides off-the-shelf integration between Mule and the Intel XML Software Suite. Called Mule Xpack for Intel XML Software Suite - the new offering is a set of instructions and Mule extensions that help to improve XML processing performance for SOA deployments. Taking a new approach to accelerating XML traffic, MuleSource teamed with Intel in a collaboration to bring the Intel XML Software Suite to the Mule ESB, enhancing and offloading XML processing. The Mule Xpack provides Mule integration support for the Intel XML Software Suite, which can be used to support three categories of XML operations: XML Parsing - reads XML documents and makes the data available for manipulation and processing to applications and programming languages; XSLT Transformat

Virtualization Breakthrough: AMD and Red Hat Demo Live Migration of a VM Between AMD, Intel Servers

Today you can't do a live migration of a virtual machine from an AMD-based physical server to an Intel-based server, or vice versa. Open source technology from Red Hat has helped AMD correct that big management headache, the two companies say.

Intel Core I7 Launched, Nehalem and X58 Tested

MojoKid writes "Today marks the official launch of Intel's new Core i7 processor, the most major overhaul of Intel's core processor architecture since the release of their Core 2 design. As has been reported, the Core i7 is a major departure from Intel's aging Front Side Bus architecture of old, now replaced by Intel's QPI (Quick Path Interconnect) serial links. This 20 lane bi-directional (40 lanes total) point-to-point connection provides 6.4 GT/s of bandwidth and scalability for future multi-socket designs as well. In addition, the Core i7 now has an integrated triple channel memory controller offering over 3X the bandwidth of the previous Core 2 architecture with DDR3 system memory. Though the product is set to ship in volume later this month, the early benchmark numbers show Intel's new chip is markedly faster clock-for-clock versus

Intel, Taiwan teaming up on mobile Linux development lab (Ars Technica)

Intel's open source Linux-based mobile platform initiative got a big boost this month from Linux distributors and new contributors that are joining to participate in the effort. The project, which is called Moblin, aims to assemble a Linux stack that is optimized for mobile Internet devices, subnotebooks, and integrated car computing systems that are designed to use Intel's Atom processor. The latest organization to join the ranks of Moblin supporters is Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), which will be working with Intel to establish a Moblin development facility. Intel is also investing in VMAX, a mobile carrier in Taiwan that plans to roll out a WiMAX network.
