Game Boys Abie Rotenberg and my ride home: related news

Game Boys, Abie Rotenberg and my ride home

I was working at the radio station minding my own business when suddenly I was called to the on-air studio. The Aliyah Revolution with Go'el and Dovid was in the middle of its live broadcast. I thought maybe there was some kind of technical emergency. I rushed in the studio, only to have Dovid ask me if I ever heard of the group Game Boys. Yes, I replied, I had seen the cover of their 2006 disc Game Boys: The Album, but that was as far as I got. I didn't actually listen to it. Well Dovid had in fact listened to it and excitedly wanted to know my opinion and if I could run to the disc library and grab it for him.

Where Has All My Spam Gone?

An anonymous reader writes "I have my own domain, which has its own email server, where I receive all my personal email. I've been getting about 800 emails a day, of which perhaps 20 are real. Suddenly, Sunday or Monday evening, the spam pretty much stopped. My volume of mail has plummeted to less than 100 a day, and as far as I can tell, I'm not missing any real mail — I'm still getting the email list subscriptions I'm expecting, and every time I ask someone to send me a test message, it gets through. My domain host insists that it doesn't do any spam filtering before mail gets to my inbox, and that they've changed nothing about their configuration. I run SpamAssassin on my server to mark, but not delete, spam, and download the whole mess to my home client, and I'm still seeing the occasional message tagged by SpamAssassin.

Google Has All My Data – How Do I Back It Up?

shadeshope writes "Slowly but surely Google has taken over my computing life. How can I back it up? Bit by bit with their mantra, hip image and brilliant services. Google has gained my trust and all my data. I am doing almost all of my computing in the cloud. Google Reader, Calender, Email, Docs and Notes have become my tools of choice. Even to the point where my day book, research notes etc are all on Google's servers. It was just so easy, enabling me to effortlessly work from multiple computers, operating systems and locations. I know, I know, this is foolish — all my eggs are firmly in one basket. It has crept up on me. As a long-time computer user, and committed pessimist, I have used many schemes over the years to ensure my data is safe.

Should I borrow from my 401(k) to buy a home?

My goal is to purchase a home by the age of 50. That gives me four years. Assuming that my salary will grow slightly over the coming years, what do you think about borrowing from my 401(k) to make the downpayment? I am single but I have been unable to save much every month. I make $40,000 per year and would like to buy a $200,000 home.

Review: The iPhone 3G was Worth the Wait

Computerworld — As I write this, my new white 16GB iPhone 3G is in the process of syncing about 10GB of music from my iTunes library. This is my second sync. Although I was one of the lucky ones able to both buy and eventually activate an iPhone 3G on Friday, I at first opted to copy over the same paltry 2GB of music that was stored on my first-generation 4GB iPhone along with my e-mail accounts and a handful of applications from the App Store. Having waited close to four hours in line at a New York AT&T store, close to 20 minutes for the purchase process, and another four-plus hours attempting to activate my iPhone at home via iTunes, I simply couldn't wait for a full sync before putting my iPhone through its paces.

Long-Range Wireless Keyboard/Mouse?

tambo writes with the sort of problem more people wish they had: "I've just bought myself an excellent LCD TV. I'd love to be able to access my home server from it for many reasons (music, video, surfing, MAME, etc.) — but my home server is in another room, 30 feet away from the TV and 50 feet away from the couch. I've acquired some gear to send PC audio and video wirelessly (over the 5.8GHz range), so that's all good. My challenge now is trying to send input wirelessly to my PC from fifty feet away. I've thought about getting a wireless USB hub, but that would introduce an additional wireless hop that would probably add to the input latency (and might interfere with all the other wireless gear in my pad.) My best bet now is to get a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse that have an unusually good range, and some of the Logitechs seem to qualif

Spending too much on my cats, part two: Should I buy a Litter Robot?

Well, it's been three months since I adopted Ruby and Dolly Parton and despite a few mishaps—a little pee on the bed, my ceramic Buddha no longer has a head and the bottoms of my dresses now have a kind of "de-constructed" look—things have gone swimmingly. I love these cats and I can't imagine my life without them. What I can imagine my life without is the smell of their litter boxes in my not-very-big apartment. We've tried all kinds of litter. The natural ones smell within an hour and the chemical ones don't smell, but scare me (some are made with known carcinogens. No, no, no.). Because I can't literally be manning the box after every visit, and because I equally don't love the scent when I get home, I really don't know what to do. I've heard good things about the Litter Robot, which waits seven minutes after your cat leaves the bo

Beijing Olympics Have More Drama Than A Video Game

I am not a big sports fan and thus I really don’t play all that many sports video games. However, right now I’m watching a quite a bit of sports on TV, and my favorite video game this summer has been Sega’s Beijing 2008. As I ran track and field in my younger days and still enjoy cycling, I find the Olympics video games to be a lot of fun. Likewise, as my father’s side of the family is of Romanian descent I think gymnastics is almost hardwired into my DNA — and even if the sport on TV bores me, I find the game version strangely compelling!

How Can I Use My Shopping Cart To Beef Up My Online Sales

Two years ago, I decided to take on the venture of selling rare books online. My vision was to have people logging on and buying my books by the dozen. Sadly, my vision was replaced by the realization that it was not as easy as I anticipated. In trying to increase my sales, I learned several things along the way.

Review: Par 72 Golf II for Palm OS

I've never been able to play golf, because of my eyesight - I just can't follow the flight of a golf ball as I hit it - which is why I loved to play Putt Putt as a child and spent many hours on the par 3 courses. But, I LOVE to play golf simulations and the likes, and Par 72 Golf II, by RESETgame, is no exception! I was actually surprised when I first downloaded and installed the game, as I didn't expect too much since the game is played on the small screen of my Palm Centro. Boy, was I surprised when I started the game for the first time! The graphics on this game are awesome! I'll go into more detail of the game graphics later.

Option activity heats up on eBay (EBAY) ahead of this afternoon's earnings report

We're all friends here, right? Well, I have a confession to make: I'm a shoe-aholic (I may have mentioned this in the past). I think it dates back to my college days (all 8 years of them), when I was working my way through school at a "big box sporting goods" retailer (no names mentioned to protect the innocent). Unfortunately for me, shoes are one of the college habits that I have proven unable to break ... curses Nike, Adidas, Converse, and Puma!! (Christmas Hint for my Faithful: those are my brands of choice, I wear a 12, and like the retro vibe) Well, one thing has led to another, with my addiction for shoes leading to an addiction to eBay (EBAY: View sentiment for EBAYsentiment, chart, options) . I'll check out the latest kicks in my size before I retreat to the Fightcave for my night's rest prompting the spouse to ask me why I am

Game Developer Claims that Dual-Layer DVDs Not Enogh for Upcoming Rage Video Game.

John Carmack, the president and technical director of id Software, said in an interview that the forthcoming Rage title from the studio mostly known for Doom and Quake series would not look exceptionally good on Microsoft Xbox 360 video game console since the developers will need to use advanced compression methods to fit the game on two dual-layer DVDs. Unfortunately, Mr. Carmack did not reveal when the game is set to become available.
