Sports Fans Growing the Video Game Industry, CEA Study Finds

ARLINGTON, Va. (Business Wire) -- Sports fans play more video games than non-sports fans, according to research from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)(R) and the Sports Video Group (SVG). In the Third Annual Sports & Technology Study, sixty percent of sports fans who report owning a high-definition television also own a video game console compared to forty-three percent of non-sports fans. The study also finds that thirty-seven percent of sports fans who own an HDTV say they will either buy their first video game system or upgrade their current console in 2008. That's compared to twenty-one percent of all consumers.

Blockbuster to Step Up as Video Game Retailer

Blockbuster Inc. has rolled out retail video games and game hardware to all United States corporate-owned Blockbuster stores as part of a broader plan to significantly expand its game business. All the corporate-owned stores will carry video game titles, hardware and accessories for the Sony PS3, Microsoft Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS game systems. Activision Announces Guitar Hero Sequel

Santa Monica-based video game maker Activision said today that it is rolling out a sequel to the firm's Guitar Hero franchise, Guitar Hero World Tour. The firm said that the new title will add drums, bass guitar, and a microphone to the popular video game title, and will also allow players to play the popular game online. The new title is being developed by Neversoft Entertainment for the Xbox 360 and PLAYSTATIOn 3; the Wii version is being developed by Vicarous Visions; with the PlayStation 2 end being handled by Budcat. New music to be included in the title include tracks from Van Halen, Linkin Park, The Eagles, Sublime, with the ability to download additional music.
