'Apple has shipped 10m iPhones three months ahead of schedule'

Apple fans at The Mac Observer have been doing some investigation into the serial numbers printed inside each iPhone and how the detail might correlate to the number of handsets made - and they claim that latest info says close to 10m of the popular devices are already on the market.

Apple Winning Over Businesses with iPhone

Icon"Apple has shown terrific growth over the past decade after virtually collapsing in the early 90s. However, one segment that it has never really been able to win back is the business sector. Not since the days of Apple IIe's or further back has Apple really enjoyed strong business adoption. And the business sector, consisting of everything from business laptops, to servers and business phones, is a huge revenue source so this was a big loss for Apple. However, Apple's hottest gadget, the iPhone is finally starting to win Apple a following in the business community."

More Evidence of Apple's Plans To Deliver A Big iPhone Unit Sales Surprise

According to the folks at BullishCross, Apple has already surpassed its goal of selling 10 million iPhones by the end of the year. This is based on their analyses of the 15-digit International Mobile Equipment Identity found on every iPhone. By their reckoning, Apple sold more than seven million this quarter, nearly double the four million most Wall Street analysts expect. If true, it means Apple is three months ahead of schedule in hitting that 10 million mark—those three months being the crucial holiday season when so many consumer electronics gadgets are sold.

Apple DMCAs iPodHash Project

TRS-80 writes "Apple has sent a DMCA takedown notice to the IpodHash project, claiming it circumvents their FairPlay DRM scheme. Some background: Apple first added a hash to the iTunesDB file in 6th-gen iPods, but it was quickly reverse-engineered. They changed it with the release of iPhone 2.0 and a project was started to reverse the new hash, but weren't successful yet. My guess is Apple used the same algorithm as FairPlay for the new hash, so Apple could use the DMCA to prevent competing apps like Songbird and Banshee from talking to iPods/iPhones. BTW, don't tell Apple, but the project uses a wiki, so the old page versions from before the takedown are still there."

Apple iPhone 3G now No2 corporate handset after outpacing Palm

There really is no stopping the Apple iPhone 3G, it is the most reliable smartphone there is, and has been proclaimed by business customers as the most satisfying mobile handset. The Apple iPhone has out done the Motorola RAZR in the United States, and Apple has taken the number two spot in the corporate smartphone market.

iPhone overtakes Palm in US biz smartphones...

While already popular in the home space, the iPhone has now just outrun Palm for second place in the US corporate world, according to a new study from ChangeWave. Closing a gap that had already been narrowing in August, the Apple device now has a place in about 14 percent of companies in November versus Palm's 11 percent. The situation is a near-reversal of the situation three months earlier, when Palm held 15 percent and Apple just 9 percent. Research in Motion's BlackBerry line maintains a clear lead at 76 percent but has remained virtually flat in share since May.

Apple lawyers hand iPod hash cracking site a DMCA notice

Although not a widely-publicized addition, one of the newer "features" Apple has added to its iPods and iPhones is a hash that protects the iTunesDB file, which stores information about what music you have on your iPod and where it's located on the iPod's hard drive. As it turns out, Apple doesn't seem to like people meddling with the iPhone and iPod touch hash, and according to Slashdot, Apple lawyers recently sent a DMCA violation notice to a project that was attempting to reverse-engineer the current version of the iTunesDB protection.

Rumor: Apple close to signing major labels to iTunes Plus

News is circulating today that Apple has reportedly been in and out of talks for the last several months with at least three music labels in hopes that they can soon add their libraries to their DRM-free iTunes Plus lineup. According to CNet, most of the negotiations are sill in early stages, but a deal with one major label is close to being done. The site points to an unsubstantiated rumor from last week that Sony BMG was/is close to a deal with Apple in order to speculate that Sony might be the deal being talked about, although CNet's own sources could not confirm that.

iPhone going to China? Apple iPhone engineer required for Beijing

There appears to be a single listing on the Apple career pages which suggest Apple has promised to release the Apple iPhone in China, this posting was made for an Apple iPhone Quality Assurance Engineer in Beijing.

Apple's iPhones: 10 Million and Counting?

Seeking Alpha authors Andy Zaky and Turley Muller estimate that 9 months into 2008, Apple has already surpassed Steve Jobs’ widely quoted (and oft-ridiculed) projection of selling 10 million iPhones this year. In particular, they calculate that Apple sold 7-7.5 million units in Q3, the final quarter of the Apple fiscal year, building on the strong sales spurt with July’s release of the iPhone 3G.

Apple to Sell 5 Million iPhones in Q4

In a note to clients, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster writes that Apple will have sold 5 million iPhones by the end of the company's fourth fiscal quarter. Munster has previously estimated some 4.1 iPhones sold by Apple's Q4. The analyst is also confident in Apple's Macintosh and iPod sales this year, increasing his Q4 projections.

Data suggests Apple has cruised past 10 million iPhone goal

An effort on the part of members of Mac Observers AFB to track IMEI iPhone numbers has led two technology analysts to conclude that Apple has drastically surpassed analystQ4 iPhone sales estimates, and reached its goal of selling 10 million iPhones in 2008 three months early.

Apple's App Store schizophrenia driving developers crazy

Apple's iPhone is, by all accounts, a success, and Apple may be on track to sell 5 million iPhone 3Gs this quarter. A big part of that success has come from the array of software options available from the App Store, the sole distribution point for third-party iPhone software. Though many developers are selling a lot of software, a significant number are becoming frustrated and angry due to Apple's recent decisions regarding which apps are fit for distribution; the situation has been made worse by reports that Apple has a policy that makes the rejection letters subject to a NDA.

In iPhone vs Android War, Apple Has First Mover Advantage

If Apple and Google had released their SDK on the same day, the outcome might have been different, according to Peter Burrows with BusinessWeek on Thursday. However, Apple has a strong head start, and that First Mover effect gives Apple the advantage.

Apple Building Search Engine To Clobber Google, TechCrunch Hears

stevejobs.jpg* Apple building search engine, TechCrunch hears. "We’ve received multiple (if thin) reports that Apple is working on a search engine of some sort. At first glance, the rumors make sense. Apple’s Safari browser has 6-7% market share, and currently uses Google as the search engine for both the standard and iPhone/iPod versions (unlike other browsers, you don’t have a choice)... Also, Apple can’t be super pleased with Google’s competition to the iPhone with Android... But one important fact that isn’t checking out - if Apple were building a search engine, they’d be hiring search experts and engineers. We’ve talked to a ton of them at all the big companies, and while some of them heard the same rumors, none have lost search employees to Apple, or heard of any specific hirings.

Apple files patent for iPod background display...

Apple has developed a technology that would let iPhones and iPods display basic warnings to users without invoking the full screen, a new US patent filing shows. The system would use a second, always-on but power-efficient backlight to illuminate a custom-shaped notification when the main backlight isn't switched on, such as an indication that an iPod is stopped or an SMS text message has reached an iPhone.

Apple Attempts to Patent Pre-Existing Display Software Idea

Nuclear Elephant writes "Apple appears to be taking ideas from commercial software already being sold and is attempting to patent the concepts as their own. According to Apple Insider, Apple has recently filed a patent application for a notification screen on the iPhone. The only problem with this is that Intellisync has been using this concept in their popular iPhone notification screen software for over a year now, and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that this is a clear rip-off. Apple recently became famous (or infamous) for stealing other people's ideas when they rolled out their Dashboard in Mac OS X, which had many similarities to a desktop widget program named the Konfabulator, which later became Yahoo widgets. The case here isn't a simple hijacking of an idea, however — Apple is applying for a patent on Intelliscreen's

Apple Admits Nvidia GPU Defect In Some MacBook Pros

bigwophh writes "The brouhaha over defective Nvidia mobile graphics chips keeps rolling along, even months after the initial headlines have faded. Despite Nvidia's promises that Apple's GeForce 8600M GT-based MacBook Pros had dodged the bullet and were immune from the defect, Apple now counters that it wasn't, in fact, so lucky. 'In July 2008, NVIDIA publicly acknowledged a higher than normal failure rate for some of their graphics processors due to a packaging defect. At that same time, Nvidia assured Apple that Mac computers with these graphics processors were not affected. However, after an Apple-led investigation, Apple has determined that some MacBook Pro computers with the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processor may be affected.' The units in question are the 15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pro notebooks with Nvidia GeFroce 8600M GT

Apple's iPhone Update 2.2 Adds Multiple Features

Apple released the 2.2 software upgrade for its iPhone. Features of Apple's iPhone update include the ability to download podcasts via iTunes and enhancements to Maps and Mail. Apple's iPhone-update timing (a day before RIM's BlackBerry Storm arrives) has conspiracy theorists talking; an analyst says the update's timing is unrelated to the Storm.

Apple lawsuit over iPhone 3G cracks and performance

If Apple thought that things were going smoothly for them in the run up to Christmas, they had better think again. A lawsuit has been filed against Apple by Nassau County resident Avi Koschitzki, who states that Apple are ignoring the fact that hairline cracks are forming on the back of the handset.
