There's a scam spreading through Twitter. Direct messages (DMs) are showing up in Twitter accounts with appealing come-ons to visit a site on blogspot.com. The text is, "hey! check out this funny blog about you..." The URL in the message then redirects to a page that looks like the Twitter login page, but is actually not on Twitter--it's a site, twitter.access-logins.com, that masquerades as Twitter to steal your login credentials instead.

imageWho would have guessed that in the New Year, Twitter, the popular micro-blogging service, would be for the most part stable, but fall victim to hackers and phishing schemes? Well, it’s true, and it will be interesting to see if this threatens Twitter’s long-term viability as it tries to mature into a revenue-making company. At a minimum, there might be a twinge of regret on the founders’ part for not selling out to Facebook when they had the chance. This weekend Twitter was the target of a phishing scam, in which messages were sent out to look-alike sites that asked users to log in using their username and password. And today, more information is surfacing on the fallout. The Twitter accounts of US president-elect Barack Obama, singer Britney Spears and other prominent figures were hacked on Monday and fake messages sent out in their names on the micro-blogging service. We immediately locked down the accounts and investigated the issue, Stone said, nothing that because of transition issues Obama has not updated his Twitter account since winning the US presidential election in November. This weekend, Twitter admitted that it is the most recent target of a phishing scam, and warned users to be wary of messages that redirect them to a look-alike sites and ask them to login using their username and password. Twitter co-founder Biz Stone wrote on the company’s blog: “We’ve identified a phishing scam directed at Twitter users and we don’t want you to get tricked into giving your password to a scammer.” The scams being sent out by email look like email notifications you might receive when you get a direct message, and say something like: “hey! check out this funny blog about you…” or “Hey, i found a website with your pic on it⦠LOL check it out here.” The link provided redirects to a site that looks like Twitter’s front page, but has a slightly different URL.

There was a silly debate soon after the awful tragedy of the terrorist attacks in Mumbai last month, where people started questioning whether or not Twitter was a legitimate news source. There were many reports from people on the scene via Twitter, and it was a fascinating (if somewhat depressing) "real-time" way of keeping up on some of what was happening. But some criticized the reliance on Twitter-as-journalism by complaining that it wasn't journalism because Twitter reports got facts wrong. That sounds good, but if that's the actual standard, then, well, pretty much nothing is journalism. As Slate is reporting, early reports from the mainstream press seemed to get much of the story wrong as well.

I just received an email from Pownce telling me that they are shutting down. As of December 15th Pownce will no longer exist. They've already stopped accepting new account sign ups. Apparently they've been bought by another blogging company. Six Apart, the makers of Movable Type, TypePad and Vox, has bought Pownce. I'm sure they have some plans for it, but they're not saying just yet.

Google announced that its Friend Connect service is now compatible with Twitter, meaning that users can now use their Twitter logon information to log into other Friend-Connect compatible sites and share social networking information. And so far, no word from Twitter on when it will become compatible with Facebook's competing service, Facebook Connect. Chalk one up for open social networking standards.
