Travel Blogue Day 5 Monsoon Season: related news

blogue day monsoon season travel
Today I visited a handful of villages about 45 kilometers east of Dhaka. The countryside is beautiful, with palms, teak trees, rice paddies, and tidy little roads where school children dressed in blue uniforms were walking and old folks tethered goats and cows. The villages were prosperous. That’s partly because of the proximity to Dhaka, where village people can find work if farming or their other local industries go slack, and partly because Grameen Bank and other micro-credit outfits are busy here. People live in houses built of wood and galvanized steel, with concrete floors. The village centers are bustling places lined with shops and clogged with rickshaws. What struck me was the remarkable resourcefulness of the villagers in this region—which is one of many parts of Bangladesh that floods in the monsoon season.

I’m a religious omnivore, with interest in Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, Islam, and Voodoo. (My true religion, the one I really believe in, is Progressivism, which I define as living life in a way that improves the lives of humans and safeguards the environment. Ergo, politically, I’m a Democrat.) So when I travel I often stop in at the local place of worship. In this case, this Sunday morning, it’s the Sree Venkateshwara Temple on small but steep hill in the middle of Hyderabad. It’s just a kilometer from my hotel.

The day I became a story on page one of the Hindustan Times (Blogged in India, between covers in Pakistan), people looked at me, looked away, and then looked again. What kicks I got. Current friends demanded a treat, forgotten friends demanded to meet, neighbours congratulated and strangers called from Gorakhpur and Buffalo (my phone number is listed on my blog). But these moments of glory are fleeting. The day dies, the daily is dumped, and that day’s story becomes yesterday’s headline. Life chugs back to anonymity and I’m back in the darkness, groping to keep the machine running — five blogs, one day-job and five bosses in that day-job to take care of.

Because the percent of online adults who travel for business in the US and Canada is so similar — 29% and 28%, respectively — Forrester took a closer look at their similarities and differences to help travel eBusiness professionals successfully serve these audiences. Although US and Canadian online business travelers are similar in many ways — gender, age, travel behavior, and more — distinct differences exist. For example, US online business travelers are more likely to own laptops and smartphones. In contrast, Canadian online business travelers are more likely to visit and update or maintain profiles on social networking sites — especially Facebook. To succeed, travel eBusiness and channel strategy professionals should focus on content, provide more business-travel-related context, and plan Canadian-specific eBusiness channel

(Prudent Press Agency)--If you already own an internet home business there is a great possibility that you are so busy in the day to day running of your business that you fail to consider that there are other ways that you can profit from your money. There are some situations where you can make more money from investments than from your actual internet home business. This is possible because allot of normal expenses you incur in your every day business is not applicable when investing, like salaries, overhead expenses, and normal every day to day expenses. You are making your money work for you when investing rather that you working for money.

Ever since Bill Gates announced a $47 million grant to TechnoServe at the World Economic Forum in Davos in January, I’ve been wondering what the organization is up to that would warrant such a big check. I had a chance to find out when I had a couple of hours of slack time in Dar es Salaam before a flight to Egypt (via Nairobi and Khartoum). The organization’s Tanzania headquarters staff had just taken up residence in new offices a few blocks from the sea. There have been some major shifts in management as well. Running the Tanzania coffee growing project, which is getting a big chunk of the Gates grant, is Tim King, a 10-year veteran of McKinsey & Co.

If there are a million NGOs in India, there must be another million in Africa. Manka’s (see previous posting) mom, Dr.Lucy Nkya, started one called Faraja Trust Fund in 1981. While Faraja (comfort, in Swahili) isn’t very large, with just 20 employees and 70 volunteers, Nkya rose to prominence. She now serves on the Tanzanian Parliament and is the cabinet minister for social development, gender, and children. Nkya was busy in the Capitol when I passed through Morogoro, her home town, but I got to speak to Victor Mulimila, the deputy director of Faraja. He told me about the witch doctors.

When Gurcharan Das took early retirement as the CEO of Procter & Gamble India at age 50 in 1995, he traveled around India to get in touch with his country. What he found is that the culture was being transformed. Because of economic reforms and the gradual breaking down of the stifling bureaucracy, “Our minds were being decolonized,” he told me. The result of Das’ travels and revelations was his book, India Unbound, which was published in India in 2000 and the US in 2001, and helped raise awareness worldwide of the new potential of India.
