Mobile newsreader service Mobispine is acquiring NewsAlloy, an Ajax, web-based RSS reader, intending to merge the two in to a “seamless” product offering personalized newsfeeds across desktop and mobile. The acquisition price is not disclosed. The NewsAlloy website claims 11,331 registered users, and Stockholm-based Mobispine says it has over 300,000 active mobile users per month. Somewhat ambitiously, they are targeting 10 million users for the combined operation. The online RSS reader game is frankly a tough challenge, in the face of mature offerings from bigger players like Google (NSDQ: GOOG) Reader, Bloglines and easier alternatives like My Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO). But Mobispine says its NewsAlloy combination can offer “a welcome change” that can be used by “everyone from tweens to seniors”.

The argument is that GPL adherents desire the freedom of their code, while those on the BSD side want freedom for their projects. "It is difficult to spend a week on Slashdot without colliding with a GPL advocate. Eager to spread their philosophy, they proselytize to anyone willing to listen, and to many who are not. Here’s a quick summary of Fortune’s look at the world of MP3 blogs: Sites like Peter Rojas’ RCRD LBL and TheFader.com attract hip readers that advertisers salivate over. But on their own, they’re too small to easily attract big advertisers. The familiar solution: an MP3 blog network. Music marketers Jon Cohen and Rob Stone of Cornerstone Promotions (which owns TheFader) have already sold Fortune 500 advertisers like Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) and Toyota on the network, which claims 240,000 readers. That’s basically the news, and the rest reads kind of like an ad for Cohen and Stone to pitch advertisers on the notion that their network of MP3 blogs is a great place to reach the right audience.

The free RSS feed reader is an J2ME MIDP application for cell phones/mobiles that is able to read most RSS servers/feed versions. Sony today said that its Reader Digital Book will be the first e-book reader ever to support the new EPUB format. The standard is one of the first to be accepted by multiple major publishers and permits both locked-down and unprotected books that automatically reflow to fit the screen or particular fonts.
