The results are in: God and science blog readers

The response to the Religious beliefs of science blog readers survey has blown me away -- when I closed the survey today to analyze the results there were 537 participants. Thanks to everyone. The results follow, and where possible I've also included figures from the Pew survey for the entire United States.

Blogged.com Adds Blog Article Search and Improves Recommendations

There are a number of blog search tools out there, and some have become controversial for their human-powered curator process and simplistic style. But such an approach has its merits when you look at the broad appeal of blog recommendations and curated suggestions. There are those end users that would like to be able to find blog content that’s not technology related, and doesn’t come from self-promotional platforms that are often found on some memes and other blog search engines.

Science Weekly podcast: Women in science and science in jelly

This week, the Science Weekly team discuss dark energy and the even darker matter of the gender gap with astrophysicist Sarah Bridle - recipient of a Women in Science fellowship. It's sponsored by a well-known cosmetics company - is it worth it? Do awards like this actually help to de-beard science? And isn't this a wider societal problem anyway?

Blog Multiplication Earn More

I just want to ask you one quick question. Are your blogs profitable? I told you it would be quick. It's real simple to answer. Either your blogs are earning for you, or their not. I will tell you something here and I will be blunt. If your blogs are earning you some type of income then you need to listen up. If your blogs are not earning you some sort of income then you DEFINETLY need to listen up. Pay attention close to what I say and maybe the next time someone asks you that question instead of saying yes or no you can say "HECK YES THEY ARE"! Now I again will be blunt. Some people consider this totally unethical and blackhat. I leave that for you to decide. A vast majority of the people that will tell you this is "blackhat", are not earning "peanuts" from their blogging efforts.

What Are YOU Doing for the International Year of Astronomy?

In 1609, Galileo Galilei looked at the heavens through a telescope for the first time, and things on Earth haven't been the same since. To celebrate the 400th anniversary of this advent of scientific discovery and thought, people and organizations from around the globe are coordinating a world-wide, year-long program called the International Year of Astronomy (IYA). Some of the goals of IYA are to stimulate worldwide interest in astronomy and science, especially among young people, to provide as many people as possible with an "astronomy experience," and to support science education in both formal and informal settings. Currently, 118 countries are going to be part of IYA. The program has the support of the United Nations, the International Astronomical Union, the US's National Science Foundation and all the space agencies around the worl

Firebrand Training warns SMEs are making it easy for hackers

Firebrand Training warns SMEs are making it easy for hackers - SMEs are endangering critical corporate information because they are failing to adequately secure their wireless networks. Failure to change preset simple ‘admin’ security settings, or choosing easy-to-crack passwords and allowing the network to be visible to potential attackers are the three most common mistakes made by small and medium businesses with their wireless setup. Firebrand Training is urging SMEs to take a more proactive approach to their wireless security – and they say it is by learning the tricks used by hackers that they will stay one step ahead of potential attacks. The Accelerated Learning pioneer has launched a White Paper “Wireless networks: are we just leaving the stable door wide open?”,outlining the key strategies employed by hackers against co

The new engineers - STAR SCIENCE By Eduardo A. Padlan, PhD

When we talk of engineers, what immediately come to mind are machines, bridges, buildings, and other structures. Engineers design and assemble structures for a specific purpose. There are now new engineers who also develop structures for a specific purpose, but this time the structures are molecules and other biological entities, and the purpose is biological. They are the protein engineers, the genetic engineers, and other biological engineers. Here are some examples of their work.

The discussion of statistics being weird is valid. In my blog post in June on the ADA update, I pointed it out as well. After a lot of digging on veterans and U.S. govt websites, I couldn't find a resolution. I'll paste below the relevant part of my blog because I can't actually link to it. (sorry). BEGIN BLOG POST EXERPT: "Regarding disabled American veterans, a 2007 Census report said that there are 6.1 million veterans with a disability, with about 3.5 million of them over 65 years of age. However, according to the Associated Press, the number of DAVs has increased 25% (to 2.9 million) since 2001, because of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. I don't know why the AP article and the Census figures were so far off on the number of DAVs. According to the AP article, there are "755,000 veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

Are US Voters Informed Enough About Science?

Naturalist writes "For decades, educators and employers have worried that too few Americans are preparing for careers in science. But there's evidence to support a new, broader concern in this election year: Ordinary Americans may not know enough about science to make informed decisions on key questions."

New blog title, new blog theme

Those of you who track this blog will have noticed a couple of things over the last while: First and not least, I haven’t been posting much and secondly the title has changed from Roads to SOA to FinanceTech Directions. The two changes are closely related as after some lengthy discussions with my friends at ebizq, I have decided to relaunch this blog. However, it will now focus exclusively on the financial services industry and broaden its scope to include all of enterprise infrastructure as it applies to that industry.

The Family Gamer: Dad's Edition

Dads are a tricky subject. Some are loving and inspiring whilst others absent and off hand. Some are communicative and open, whilst others are as hard to fathom as the depths of Loch Ness. Some are in touch with their creativity and at ease with their feminine side, whilst others are purely manly. Although the people I've got to know through Family Gamer talk about their dads in different ways, they all seem to agree that they make up a big part of what it is to be a family.

The Hourglass Aging Science Blog Carnival

Chris Patil of Ouroboros is organizing a blog carnival for aging science and longevity research topics: "There's enough good science blogging about the biology of aging that the community deserves its own monthly carnival (along the lines of the general-biology carnival Tangled Bank, or the neuroscience carnival Encephalon, both of which we've hosted here before). So let's start one. I thought long and hard about names and settled on 'Hourglass,' which is topical enough to be appropriate, but general to be inclusive. ... Topics of posts should have something to do with the biology of aging, broadly speaking - including fundamental research in biogerontology, age-related disease, ideas about life extension technologies, your personal experience with calorie restriction, maybe even something about the sociological implications of increased
