The discussion of statistics being weird is valid. In my blog post in June on the ADA update, I pointed it out as well. After a lot of digging on veterans and U.S. govt websites, I couldn't find a resolution. I'll paste below the relevant part of my blog because I can't actually link to it. (sorry). BEGIN BLOG POST EXERPT: "Regarding disabled American veterans, a 2007 Census report said that there are 6.1 million veterans with a disability, with about 3.5 million of them over 65 years of age. However, according to the Associated Press, the number of DAVs has increased 25% (to 2.9 million) since 2001, because of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. I don't know why the AP article and the Census figures were so far off on the number of DAVs. According to the AP article, there are "755,000 veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

I was fortunate to receive a Twitter message from the Microsoft virtualization team after writing my blog post A Weekend With Hyper-V. If you aren't familiar with the Windows Virtualization Team Blog, you can find it at http://blogs.technet.com/virtualization. Ronald Beekelaar, Microsoft MVP of Virtual Machine Technology, has an excellent blog post there about the Top 5 Things You Should Know About Hyper-V, which I'm summarizing here (you can read Ronald's post for the full details.) I appreciate Ronald and the other team members putting information like this up on their blog. It helps accelerate learning and sharing info about Hyper-V.

An anonymous reader writes "I have my own domain, which has its own email server, where I receive all my personal email. I've been getting about 800 emails a day, of which perhaps 20 are real. Suddenly, Sunday or Monday evening, the spam pretty much stopped. My volume of mail has plummeted to less than 100 a day, and as far as I can tell, I'm not missing any real mail — I'm still getting the email list subscriptions I'm expecting, and every time I ask someone to send me a test message, it gets through. My domain host insists that it doesn't do any spam filtering before mail gets to my inbox, and that they've changed nothing about their configuration. I run SpamAssassin on my server to mark, but not delete, spam, and download the whole mess to my home client, and I'm still seeing the occasional message tagged by SpamAssassin.

It can be all about you or you can write your blog about something you feel strongly about. Make a point and make it stick. Get readers and let them post comments to what you have to say. Create a discussion.

Microsoft will be more guarded in what it shares with the outside world as its engineers busy themselves working on Windows 7, according to a new Engineering Windows 7 blog created by two senior W7 engineering managers, Jon DeVaan and Steven Sinofsky. The authors say they will post "regularly" but that Microsoft will be "maintaining a little bit more control over the communication around Windows 7." They add: "We ... definitely learned some lessons about 'disclosure' and how we can all too easily get ahead of ourselves in talking about features before our understanding of them is solid." There will be a lot of white space to fill in their blog if they're duty-bound not to say much.

shadeshope writes "Slowly but surely Google has taken over my computing life. How can I back it up? Bit by bit with their mantra, hip image and brilliant services. Google has gained my trust and all my data. I am doing almost all of my computing in the cloud. Google Reader, Calender, Email, Docs and Notes have become my tools of choice. Even to the point where my day book, research notes etc are all on Google's servers. It was just so easy, enabling me to effortlessly work from multiple computers, operating systems and locations. I know, I know, this is foolish — all my eggs are firmly in one basket. It has crept up on me. As a long-time computer user, and committed pessimist, I have used many schemes over the years to ensure my data is safe.

Sometimes it feels like I've been blogging about livin' la vida low-carb forever, but there was a life for me prior to my 180-pound weight loss and subsequent career path I am now enjoying. Looking back at all those old jobs I have had--customer service, retail, marketing, management, political writer, short order cook, busboy, and a lot more jobs that I don't care to even remember--all of them prepared me for the work I am doing now serving the needs of my readers and I am grateful for the training I received from each of those.

One of the risks that I willingly take blogging about health as someone who has not been trained in either medicine or nutrition is the fact that there are a whole lot of people who are much more intelligent than I am about the subjects I write about. It's just a fact of life that I've lived with since day one of my blog more than three years ago. And it doesn't bother me a bit that I don't have all the answers.

Computerworld — As I write this, my new white 16GB iPhone 3G is in the process of syncing about 10GB of music from my iTunes library. This is my second sync. Although I was one of the lucky ones able to both buy and eventually activate an iPhone 3G on Friday, I at first opted to copy over the same paltry 2GB of music that was stored on my first-generation 4GB iPhone along with my e-mail accounts and a handful of applications from the App Store. Having waited close to four hours in line at a New York AT&T store, close to 20 minutes for the purchase process, and another four-plus hours attempting to activate my iPhone at home via iTunes, I simply couldn't wait for a full sync before putting my iPhone through its paces.

Last weekend a friend was moaning about endless problems with Windows XP on his desktop PC. We installed Ubuntu 7.04 on it. The problems went away. That started me thinking about my own "daily driver" computer, a Dell Latitude that also runs Ubuntu 7.04, and it made me realize that I hadn't thought about my laptop or its operating system in many months. Linux -- especially Ubuntu -- has become so reliable and simple that for most end users it's simply not worth thinking about, any more than we think about tools like wrenches and screwdrivers. Does this mean desktop GNU/Linux has become so boring that it's not worth noticing?

My reader's advisory interviews as a children's librarian are informed by the fact that my two teenage daughters, avid readers both, have always seemed to effectively self-censor. When they came across books that were too spicy/complicated for them, they'd react with disinterest, puzzlement, or complete embarrassment. True, I did cast a motherly eye over their reading material, but I never dreamed of taking anything away. The key, as Shannon and several others pointed out, is to keep recommending utterly fabulous books that happen to be more age-appropriate. In the library, I would never dream of saying "no" or even "are you sure?" to an 11-year-old who asked for Gossip Girls, but I would also steer her to books in the juvenile section with similar appeal .

(this if from my first post) To tell you a little bit about myself, my name is Tim Meinberg I have been vegan for around 3 years now. I work in IT doing all kinds of stuff from networking to graphic design. I have lived in the DC area my whole life, I love it and hate it here, but I am not going to get into that. I love my bicycles too, I worked in the bike industry for several years before I got into IT, did a some racing too, mostly cyclocross. I hope to provide you readers with some good reading, articles, ramblings, reviews, and the such. Jesper Johansson, co-author of Windows Vista Security: Securing Vista Against Malicious Attacks, recently wrote an article in The Register which dissects a new type of threat. Anyone with a blog has probably seen blog spam- comments made on blog posts which have little or nothing to do with the actual blog post, but contain links to spam-related web sites. I have spam filters in place, so I rarely even see the blog spam posts. They are an annoyance, and I simply delete them in periodic batches. However, Jesper did stop to look at the spam and noticed that a new breed was becoming prevalent. The new breed, rather than just leading to some annoying spam site, are actually malware attacks. For a complete breakdown of the threat, and Jesper's dissection and analysis, check out Anatomy of a Malware Scam.

Well, it's been three months since I adopted Ruby and Dolly Parton and despite a few mishaps—a little pee on the bed, my ceramic Buddha no longer has a head and the bottoms of my dresses now have a kind of "de-constructed" look—things have gone swimmingly. I love these cats and I can't imagine my life without them. What I can imagine my life without is the smell of their litter boxes in my not-very-big apartment. We've tried all kinds of litter. The natural ones smell within an hour and the chemical ones don't smell, but scare me (some are made with known carcinogens. No, no, no.). Because I can't literally be manning the box after every visit, and because I equally don't love the scent when I get home, I really don't know what to do. I've heard good things about the Litter Robot, which waits seven minutes after your cat leaves the bo

My recent blog post "Red Hat Takes Hypervisor Control Back From Citrix" appears to have elicited a response from Simon Crosby, CTO Virtualization, at Citrix. I say appears because the comment isn't verified so I can't attest for sure it was posted by Simon, so keep that in mind as you read this blog post. (Too bad NWW doesn't use Intense Debate so comments could be authenticated. I guess that's for another upcoming blog post.) I take away three main points Simon is making in his comments: 1) oVirt (a.k.a. Linux KVM) isn't really a hypervisor per se, 2) Red Hat's still involved in Xen so they still support it, 3) oVirt/KVM have some maturing to do, but Simon's already declaring VMware, Xen and Hyper-V the viable hypervisor choices. Lets take a further look at the comment left by Simon.
