Hollywood Artist Explores the 'Green' side of Famous L.A. Landmarks

LOS ANGELES, July 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Nathan Horner's new installment in the 'L.A. Icons' series celebrating L.A.'s famous landmarks (Hollywood Boulevard, Beverly Hills, Griffith Observatory) focuses on the vegetation: the shrub outside Yamashiro restaurant, the Palm Trees on Hollywood Boulevard, hedges on Hollywood way. Whereas his earlier paintings focused primarily on the architectural aspect of these landmarks (Beverly Hills Hotel, Mann Chinese Theater, Capitol Records), the new paintings explore the play of light and shadow of the vegetation on the buildings and surrounding landscape. The exhibit opens at EM & Co, a West Hollywood boutique hosting the works of Los Angeles artists alongside fashions from global and local designers.

Blog Buzz: John McCain's Ads and Barack Obama's Audacity

So, is the McCain campaign backing down on its false ad about Obama wanting to bring the media to the troops? (Conservative answer: Even if the specifics are off, Obama was still wrong.) Regardless, he's got a new ad up trying to portray Obama as a political version of Britney or Paris (oh, how the McCainiacs wish there was Berlin Hilton or Berliny Spears). So, is the McCain campaign trying to paint Obama as "uppity"? Or are they just going Harold Ford on him? Libs say the ad simply makes Big McC look either ridiculous or like C. McC-gomery Burns. Conservatives disagree, of course. The important point, one conservative argues, is that they're closing the Obama money gap by getting the media to run their commercials over and over and over.

Amazon To Launch New Streaming Video Service

The New York Times reports that Amazon has begun a limited testing of its new Video on Demand service, which will replace its Unbox store. The significant difference between the two is that the new service will stream movies through your browser rather than requiring you to download them and use Amazon's video player. Users will also retain access to movies and shows they're previously purchased. The service is not expected to be particularly profitable; Amazon is most likely looking to the future.

Blog Buzz: McCain Attacks Obama With the Troops, and Vice Presidential Speculation Grows Odder

John McCain's campaign is running a new ad accusing Barack Obama of blowing off a visit to wounded troops to go shoot some hoop. The ad is false, so why isn't the press saying so? And is the Obama campaign scared of going after McCain? And Is Obama McCain's piata? But does the Mc-flailing make sense? McCain wasn't always in favor of using the military to score political points. Oh, and by the way: The ad is being run for insiders. (Don't worry, voters, we'll endlessly repeat the message, so you don't have to actually see the ad.)

New Olympics Scoring: No More Perfect 10.0

Dekortage writes "If you watch the Olympics gymnastics this year, you may be confused by the new scoring system which will let athletes score 14, 17, or even higher. The new rules are 'heavy on math' and employ two panels of judges: one for technical difficulty, which adds points up from a score of zero; the other for execution and technique, which starts at 10.0 and subtracts for errors. The two numbers are then combined for the final score. As one judge put it, 'The system rewards difficulty. But the mistakes are also more costly.' The new rules were adopted after South Korea protested a scoring at the 2004 Olympics." Now I'm sure that no Slashdot reader will intentionally watch any "sport" that has judges determine the winner, but their wives/girlfriends might seize control of the remote because they want to know who is the best at tha
