Alphabicycle Order, premiered by the Hallé in 2007, is a boisterous, quite ambitious work for children’s choir with narrator (the lucid Henry Goodman) and orchestra (under Gardner), setting witty rhymes by Christopher Reid. Matthews’s colourful, Brittenish writing easily matches their punning playfulness. The Horn Concerto, from 2001, is a single, 10-part movement in which the soloist (the prodigious Richard Watkins) interacts with four orchestral horns off stage. This should be a recipe for hornism on holiday, and there is much hunting clatter in the air, but the dominant tone is melancholy, even dark. It is a searching, meditative essay, with a sad, sostenuto farewell.
