iPhone 3G on Pay As You Go at The Carphone Warehouse

The Carphone Warehouse, the only independent mobile phone retailer to stock the iPhone 3G, today announces that the 8GB and 16GB iPhone 3Gs will be available in store on Pay As You Go from 16 September 2008, costing £349.99 and £399.99 respectively. The launch makes this innovative handset accessible to more, with Pay As You Go customers now able to benefit from the full iPhone experience and receive inclusive unlimited data and Wi-Fi for 12 months.

Apple Debuts App Store in Advance of iPhone 3G

Apple's App Store has arrived. Apple launched its App Store Thursday which features third-party applications for the iPhone 3G one day in advance of the much anticipated iPhone 3G which goes on sale Friday. The App Store became available this morning when Apple released its 7.7 version of the iTunes software. The App Store will also be available directly from the iPhone 3G's software.

iPhone App Store Sells $30 Million Worth Of Apps In First Month

Before the App Store for Apple's iPhone went live it had been predicted by some analysts to have the potential to become a $1 billion business by 2009. It is now being reported that Apple shifted an impressive $30 million worth of software in the first month, which would make those predictions seem entirely possible. Steve Jobs has pointed out that Apple only receive 30% of the money made from the app store (though 30% still seems a nice chunk to me), with 70% going to the app developers. An example of a hugely successful application is Sega's Super Monkeyball, which they say sold over 300,000 copies (at $9.99) in its first 20 days. Also of interest is that Jobs has confirmed that Apple has built in a feature that can allow them to remotely kill and remove any app sold through the store on a users iPhone.

California Can't Perform Pay Cut Because of COBOL

beezzie writes "Last week, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger ordered a pay cut, to minimum wage of $6.55/hr,, for 200,000 state workers because a state budget hadn't been approved yet. The state controller, who has opposed the pay cut on principle and legal grounds, now says the pay cut isn't even feasible because the state's payroll systems are so antiquated. He says it would take 6 months to go to minimum wage, and 9 months more to restore salaries once a budget is passed. The system is based on COBOL, according to the Sacramento Bee, and the state hasn't yet found the funds or resources, in 10 years of trying, to upgrade it." The article quotes a consultant on how hard it is to find COBOL programmers; he says you usually have to draw them out of retirement.

The App Store for iTunes launched just ahead of the new iPhone 3G on July 10th to better advertise the device's touchscreen and wireless networking capabilities. Hosting over 1500 applications for free download or purchase at time of writing, it's since proven to be one of the more popular destinations for iPhone owners. According to Apple CEO Steve Jobs, the App Store has reached 60 million downloads, generating $30 million USD in sales in 30 days. Assuming sales keep pace, App Store downloads could net Apple nearly $360 million USD in yearly revenue:

I will soon be receiving two and a half years of back pay from disability insurance and I am confused about how much or what part I must pay taxes on. My employer paid the premiums for basic long-term disability and I paid for "enhanced" long-term disability with after-tax dollars, which shortened the waiting period from 180 days to 90 days. Does this mean that the only portion that is nontaxable is the amount of the back pay that is equal to 90 days of pay, and the rest, including future monthly payments, is taxable?
