Been meaning to do this since the ICM poll of Glasgow East was published by The Sunday Telegraph at the start of this week. It was reported, including by The Sunday Telegraph, that the 14-point lead held by Labour over the Scottish National Party was good news for Gordon Brown, who would be heaving a sigh of relief that Labour looked like holding the seat.

What should most alarm Labour MPs after the Glasgow East by-election is that the party’s calamitous defeat is part of a trend and not a big surprise. Labour has been performing abysmally in local and by-elections for several years now. Its crisis is deep and not simply a matter of leadership, although inevitably the future of Gordon Brown will be brought into sharp focus once more.

The good news about the Internet is the information we can get our cursors on instantly; the bad news is the information we can get our heads around instantly, but without any way of gauging accuracy, relevance, or completeness. This is particularly evident in the financial-investment-retirement world, where thousands of websites tell us how to do things and why, and why things work the way they do and how. Few gurus explain why and how certain concepts and plans of action just may not work the way they are supposed to.

John Woo's "Red Cliff" has set a box office record for a domestic movie in China, Reuters reported. The film, which has earned about 302 million yuan, or $44 million, since it opened on July 10, surpassed the previous domestic record set by "Curse of the Golden Flower," according to a report on Sohu.com, a Chinese Web site. The budget for the Woo film, $80 million, made it China's most expensive. "Red Cliff," which stars Tony Leung and Takeshi Kaneshiro, will open the Tokyo International Film Festival on Oct. 18. "Titanic," which holds the box office record in China, earned about $53 million.

Then here’s the question. Why hasn’t the Obama campaign opened their Christmas gifts and made use of them? Why haven’t they gone after McCain’s “disgrace” remark regarding Social Security? Have they said anything at all about that? Why haven’t they hammered away at some of his statements and the inconsistencies surrounding them about carve-out privatization plans? Will they do anything with the implication identified above that McCain must be planning to cut benefits? Why so much silence from the Obama campaign on the Social Security issue?

Test cricket has been led another few steps towards the gallows. Its neck is not quite in the noose, but the platform steps are in sight. This might be hard to believe considering the full house at Lord's and the quality of the home side's batting. But it is so, and given the pace of affairs the day is not far off when the rope will be round the neck.

Those hoping for a PS3 price cut in the near future better not hold their breaths. A Sony spokesperson confirmed on Friday that the company had no plans right now to give you another deal on the machine, and anyone hoping for that kind of news at Leipzig will be sorely disappointed. Given that they slashed the price less than a year ago, this shouldn't be too surprising. Though PS3 sales are still trailing behind the Wii, it's relatively recent discount put it neck to neck for second place with the cheaper Xbox 360. [Reuters]
