New Online Marketplace for Digital Photos, Videos and Catchy Tunes

Over 100 million digital cameras were sold in Europe this year. The average number of photos taken with a digital camera is 500, resulting in 50 billion new photos every year. If only 0,1 % of these were saved, Europeans would have over 50 million new, beautiful digital photos on their PCs every year. Usually not much is done with these beautiful photos. Almost the same is applicable for the many videos, tunes and ringtones teenagers create on their PCs themselves. From now on it is possible to get more out of these. The new website http://www.PhotoSociety.eu, introduced by internet and marketing company Senwa, gives all Europeans the opportunity to make the most of their most beautiful photos, videos and MP3 tunes.

The Current Development Kernel is...Linux-next?

"Linux-next is a somewhat strange base on which to try to develop, though. It is built anew every day from over 100 subsystem trees, each of which can, itself, change from one day to the next. So linux-next is a moving target, just like the mainline is. But, unlike the mainline, linux-next has no consistent or coherent history. Every day's linux-next tree is a completely new creation with a unique - and transient - history."

Multi-Level Marketing Company Threatens Blogger Who Writes Critical Post

Over and over and over again, we hear stories of companies that simply dislike what others are saying about them online, and send over threatening legal letters with no legal basis. These cease-and-desist letters are mostly designed to scare users into giving in, because there's no law against someone criticizing you or saying something bad about you (assuming it's not untrue). The latest, sent in by Davis Freeberg involves the Everyday Finance blog. The blogger there was approached by a company called "Shop to Earn," which offers a multi-level marketing (MLM) system. The blogger wrote a post about it, which Davis Freeberg describes as "well balanced," though the blogger explained the weaknesses of the system and why he chose not to participate.

Critics wonder if gender-neutral stories are art or propaganda

Two new publishers of children's books have sparked debate in gender-equal Sweden over their professed aim of instilling the country's open-minded social values in the next generation. But some critics are outraged, saying they are simply pushing propaganda disguised as literature. Small publishers Vilda and Olika opened their doors last year with the express aim of making children's books that promote liberal values and challenge traditional views on sex, race and sexual orientation. Together they have released about a dozen titles, including a book about a boy who wears pink sandals, and a story about a girl who likes to make farting sounds using her armpits, and who has two dads. "You cannot write a book simply because you want it to be gender equal," said Lotta Olsson, a literary critic at Sweden's paper of reference, Dagens Nyheter.

The New and Improved Next-Gen Java Applet Plug-in Technology

Next-Generation Java Plug-in Technology (available in the Java SE 6 Update 10, has breathed new life into Java applet technology for delivering programs over the web. At least that is what Dana Nourie and Kenneth Russell contend in their article entitled "Next Generation in Applet Java Plug-in Technology." Nourie and Russell write that the next-generation Java Plug-in offers a completely redesigned architecture that provides powerful new capabilities to applets in the web browser, while improving the overall reliability and functionality of applets in a backward-compatible manner. Among the benefits one might expect from next-gen applet technology are:

Survey Reveals Growth in Online Professional Networking Among Legal Professionals, Appetite for Lawyer-Specific Networking Solutions

LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 10, 2008--A new survey reveals that almost 50 percent of attorneys are members of online social networks and over 40 percent of attorneys believe professional networking has the potential to change the business and practice of law over the next five years. However, less than ten percent say they can rely on their current network to help them work more efficiently and cost effectively. The survey of 650 attorneys also reveals the high degree of interest – more than 40 percent – among lawyers in joining an online professional network designed specifically for their profession.

Efaflex presents its patented door area surveillan...

EFA-SCAN is the first laser scanner worldwide for doors. The scanner completely captures the whole area in front of the door and intelligently combines motion capturing and reliable door area protection in only one device.Within the dynamic capturing zone EFA-SCAN reacts like a pulse generator. When a moving object or a person is scanned the device reacts within a fraction of a second and the door opens.Geometry and logic of the capturing zone - with a maximum range of 10 x 10 meters - can be freely chosen. The zone can easily be programmed by the user via a simple remote control. EFA-SCAN not only detects movements but also captures their range, direction and speed. The impulse for opening is only transmitted to the door if vehicles or persons move in the direction of the door.

Fax over IP (FoIP): What is the Right Way to Implement it for Your Organization

There is a lot of "buzz" these days about Fax over IP (FoIP) and every faxing organization that implements Voice over IP (VoIP) should indeed take a close look at IP-based faxing. Both technologies bring traditional telephony applications (voice and fax) into data network environments, allowing organizations to transport phone or fax calls over an IP data network.

Panasonic over Sony is the preference in Japan

Just when Nintendo is crushing Sony’s dream to produce an ultimate gaming console, Panasonic has taken over Sony to be Japan’s most trusted brand. The result came after Nikkei surveyed around 600 respondents about their buying habits for television, DVD players and other consumer electronic items. Furthermore, when the respondents were asked about their current purchase of next purchase for TV and DVD recorders, Panasonic came on top.

Allman Brothers Sue Yet Another Record Label Over iTunes Royalties

Reuters is running an article about how the Allman Brothers Band is suing Universal Music for apparently not paying the band royalties owed for iTunes downloads. This seemed like yet another example of a record label squeezing its artists, while insisting that it's always looking out for the artists' best interests. Of course, then I remembered that this isn't the first time this has come up with the Allman Brothers. More than two years ago, we wrote about the Allmans suing Sony over the same issue. At that time, there was a dispute over how the label was counting iTunes downloads, and which clause iTunes downloads fit under in the band's contract. This recent lawsuit seems like a similar dispute with Universal, but it does make you wonder why the band sued Sony back in 2006, but waited until now to sue Universal?

Indian Court Demands Google Hand Over Anonymous Blogger's Identity

It would appear that Google is discovering some of the differences in the legal system in India as compared to the US. Just after we wrote about how Google (along with Microsoft and Yahoo) were sued over ads, there are some stories coming out about how an Indian court has ordered Google to hand over the identity of an anonymous blogger who was criticizing an Indian company, Gremach Infrastructure Equipments & Projects Ltd. While anonymous speech is somewhat protected (within certain limits) in the US, that's not the case in many other countries. As the link above notes, this may force Google to change the way it does business in India.

Next legal battle for eBay may be over counterfeit software

Online auction house eBay may have won a major court victory when it prevailed over Tiffany, but its legal troubles are hardly behind it. In that case, a judge ruled that eBay was taking reasonable efforts to keep counterfeit items off its site and used Tiffany's trademarked name appropriately, but the auctioneer lost a similar battle against Louis Vuitton in French courts. Now, word comes that a software industry group is considering suing the auctioneer over counterfeit items, this time on copyright grounds.

A post earlier this year by CNET News.com's Stephen Shankland pondering how he should store photos while traveling got me thinking about the same question.
