Free Press senior editor Amber Qureshi preempted North American rights to Emily Gould’s And the Heart Says…"Whatever” via Melissa Flashman at Trident, who closed the deal last Friday for a rumored low six figures. Gould, author of a recent New York Times magazine cover article about her life online, will weave a picture of what it’s like to be a young person in New York City in the early 2000s through a series of “honest, searching and wry” recollections. The former Gawker editor was also previously an editor at Hyperion. Free Press plans a 2010 publication.

When we first started Techdirt, one of the things I said clearly on the site was not to send us press releases, as we had no interest in writing about them. Yet, so many PR people clearly chose not to read the site and they send them anyway. They don't read the fact that we don't want press releases -- and in most cases they clearly don't read the site because the press releases obviously are about stuff we never write about. And it just gets worse and worse. These days, my inbox is filled with more press releases than regular email -- and I don't post any of them. You would think that PR people would eventually recognize how inefficient it is to send these press releases -- but since it's so easy to just cc every email address in a press list, they never even think about it.

In May, AT&T briefly gave all iPhone users free Wi-Fi for a short period. The free Wi-Fi party ended quickly after the company realized that by simply switching the browser user agent to mobile Safari, anyone could get free access. Shortly thereafter, references to the free Wi-Fi again popped up briefly on the AT&T website, only to disappear with the company offering no comment. Now a user submits this link to our news queue showing that references to free AT&T Wi-Fi for smartphones has once again popped up on the AT&T website. Says big blue:

Linux.com has an interesting look at the inner workings of the Free Software Foundation (FSF). "The purpose of the Free Software Foundation (FSF) is probably obvious from its name -- but what does promoting free software mean in terms of everyday activity? Examining the roles of the organization shows how complex the FSF's advocacy role has become. It also reveals the range of services available to the free software community, and helps to explain how such a small group has had such a major influence on computer technology. As a 501(c)3 charity in the United States, the FSF is run by a board of directors. The current board includes FSF founder and president Richard M. Stallman and long-term member Henry Poole, but, in the last few years, new faces have appeared on the board.

Okay, lets admit it: Everybody likes free (well almost everybody, since there is a history of "free" products evolving into for-profit companies). To find out what products were popular in the higher education market place, I conducted a "scientific" survey asking a random selection (a handful of security officers in my address book) to identify their five favorite free security software packages. Based on five responses, here are the results. (In the interest of full disclosure, five responses cannot be represented as a "higher education" response.) Drum Roll. "May I have the envelope, please?"

An anonymous reader sends in a Science News article that begins: "Human free will might seem like the squishiest of philosophical subjects, way beyond the realm of mathematical demonstration. But two highly regarded Princeton mathematicians, John Conway and Simon Kochen, claim to have proven that if humans have even the tiniest amount of free will, then atoms themselves must also behave unpredictably" Standard interpretations of quantum mechanics, of course, embrace unpredictability. But many physicists aren't comfortable with that, and are working to develop deterministic interpretations of quantum mechanics. Conway and Kochen's proof argues that these efforts will be fruitless — unless one is willing to give up human free will, in a very strong sense.

Though they may be short and simple, press releases are one of the best ways to boost profits and publicity. Press releases are documents released by businesses to the media that explain something about the company or an event that will be taking place soon. The information in a press release can be used by media sources to create a feature story and make the company more visible to the public eye.

flosofl writes "Matthew Paul Thomas has an entry on his blog called Why Free Software Has Poor Usability, And How To Improve It. While this advice is helpful and may indeed lead to improvements in many open source programs, the guidelines may be much more difficult for smaller projects. From the entry, 'Free Software has a long and healthy tradition of "show me the code." But when someone points out a usability issue, this tradition turns into "patches welcome," which is unhelpful since most designers aren't programmers. And it's not obvious how else usability specialists should help out.'" Thomas has been developing the ideas in this essay for years. The critique is comprehensive, listing 15 challenges in the way software projects, and in particular free software projects, are structured, with suggestions for improving each one.
