Dave writes in with an interesting story suggesting that Major League Soccer is potentially violating the DMCA by issuing a takedown of footage for which it does not own the copyright. The details are a little confusing, and some parts aren't entirely clear -- but from the account at the link, two Major League Soccer teams participated in a separate tournament, called the U.S. Open Cup. The event was not televised at all, despite efforts among fans to provide a streaming webcast. Apparently, at the soccer match, a fight broke out, and the local news covered it, using footage from the game. Following this, some bloggers posted the news stations' story about the fight on YouTube -- at which point MLS sent a DMCA takedown notice. The question is whether or not MLS has copyright over the footage (MLS's trademarks are meaningless here, as the

SYDNEY, Australia (AP): In one respect, 17-year-old Elysse Perry is like many other teens her age, always having to deal with a messy, cluttered bedroom. “It’s a bit of an atrocity at the moment, as my mom reminds me every second day,” Perry says, laughing. The year 12 student at Pymble Ladies College in Sydney has an excuse for the untidy state of affairs — she’s playing both cricket and soccer for Australia’s national teams, and doing a pretty good job of juggling both. She’ll be on the field in Hanoi, Vietnam for the Australian “Matildas” soccer team when it begins play Thursday in the Women’s Asian Cup against Taiwan. In her first match for Australia, the defender scored the opening goal in an 8-1 win last year over Hong Kong. Last Friday in Australia’s 2-1 win over Canada, Perry made several dangerous forays on the right wing and pro

New York City Opera has commissioned American composer Charles Wuorinen to write an opera based on Brokeback Mountain, a love story about two U. S. ranch-hands that won three Oscars when it was turned into a movie. The opera house's spokesman Gerard Mortier said in a statement on Sunday that Wuorinen had accepted an invitation to compose an opera based on Annie Proulx's short story. It is slated to premiere during City Opera's 2013 spring season. "Ever since encountering Annie Proulx's extraordinary story I have wanted to make an opera on it, and it gives me great joy that Gerard Mortier and New York City Opera have given me the opportunity to do so," Wuorinen, 70, said in a statement. Brokeback Mountain is the story of two men who meet and fall in love on the fictional Brokeback Mountain in Wyoming in 1963 with their complex relationship

Movie and Game writer Justin Marks has written an impassioned plea for the industry to concentrate more on artfully story-entwined gameplay, exploring what he thinks major titles are missing these days. "But for the most part, we as an industry are stuck in the same trap that GTA exemplifies. We value narratives in games, we understand their purpose and their necessity, and yet we have no idea how to parse them effectively into the game's interactive structure. As technology gets better, the weaknesses of poor story integration are more exposed."

Los Angeles - Prepare yourselves for the latest video game drama to make the transition to movie theatres. But if you are expecting something on the lines of Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Doom or Max Payne, think again. This story has no blood or guts, though there's plenty of sweat and tears. It's the story of Nolan Bushnell, who created Atari, the world's first video game company in 1972, and then invented the first popular video game Pong. The movie, to be called Atari, will star Leonardo DiCaprio as Bushnell, who counted Apple co-founders Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak among his early employees before selling the company in 1978 for 28 million dollars. DiCaprio is also producing the movie which is being written by indie scribes Brian Hecker and Craig Sherman.
