New Media and Museums in Eastern Europe

New media art is no stranger to eastern Europe and the Balkans; from the early net.art of Vuc Cosic to the collective work of Apsolutno, these regions were the proving ground for many groundbreaking experiments in media, politics, and art. So the upcoming international symposium on (New) Media Art in Museums this October in Croatia signals that the region's consideration of media art has come full circle from unknown outsiders and agitators to curated collectibles (not too dissimilar to the path traced in other regions or for other "avant-gardes"). The intersection of cultural institutions like museums with new media art continues to confound both artists and curators alike. No standard institutional model has arisen for the collecting of such work, for how to frame it in the overall programs of the museum, nor how to preserve the work.

Law Professors Want New Trial for First RIAA Trial Win - Making available issue could lead to new trial but not necessarily new outcome

Last fall RIAA got a big win in the courts when Jammie Thomas was ordered to pay over $200,000 in fines just for “making available” music downloads for sharing. Recently, the judge in that case said that he was considering giving that trial a second chance because nationwide cases indicate that solely making the files available for distribution (with no proof that they were actually distributed) isn’t actually a crime. A group of lawyers has submitted a brief for the judge’s review which does indeed suggest that a new trial should be granted because of this issue. This doesn’t mean that Thomas would be in the clear; she could still be found in violation of copyright infringement even if a new trial is granted but she would get a second chance to prove her side of the case.

Mac Bloggers Get Dropped, Get Apps, Get 48 Hours

Rumblings in the land of iPhone dominated Apple-focused blogs this week, as a small but loud number of owners complained about how little 3G their new iPhones have. Networks are looking at chipmakers, chipmakers are looking at networks, everyone's looking at Apple, and Apple, as far as anyone can tell, is looking at its shoes. The company has said nothing officially, though rumor has it they're working on a fix.

Dell to Release New MP3 Player with Zing Tech, Media Store, Says Rumor

Remember Dell's DJ Ditty MP3 player? Probably not, since Dell shut its PMP shop a while back. But over at the Wall St Journal, there's a rumor that Dell is planning on re-entering the PMP market with a new device that's been under development and test. The device, name unknown, has a screen and simple navigation controls and would "connect to online music services via a Wi-Fi Internet connection." This would tie in with a new online media service, allowing download of music and movies which could also be played on PC. Key in this is software developed by Zing (which Dell bought last year) which would come installed on PCs and PMPs, and manage the media movements. There's mention of a potential Fall launch, and costs for the PMP of less than $100.
