Blog Buzz Barack Obama s Mortgage Rorschach John McCain s Shakeup and Flip Flops: related news

Blog Buzz: Barack Obama's Mortgage Rorschach, John McCain's Shakeup, and Flip-Flops

Depending (mostly) on your political bent, today's Washington Post story about Barack Obama's home loan is evidence of media schizophrenia, media incompetence, an Obama real estate scandal, or an Obama non scandal.

Blog Buzz: The Great McCain-Obama-Hilton-Spears Race Debate of '08

The kafuffle over McCain's Britney/Paris/Barack (Buzz certainly never thought we'd write that combo) continues, with debate about whether or not Team McCain is Harold Ford-ing Obama. (To Harold Ford: To feature attractive, available white women in an ad against a black politician in an effort to play on racist fears of interracial mating.) Or maybe it's not racist, just sexist? Or maybe McCain needs his own celebrity comparisons (Naomi Campbell, Amy Winehouse)? And then there's the debate about whether Team Obama is itself playing the race card against McCain. Oh, and: The McCain-supporting wing of the Hilton family isn't wild about the ad. Certainly the oddest take on the Brit-Obama McCain ad comes from Joe "Relax and Enjoy It" Lieberman. Or maybe not, as Hot Air's Allahpundit points out, there's this gem of Oliver Stone-ry.

Blog Buzz: John McCain's Ads and Barack Obama's Audacity

So, is the McCain campaign backing down on its false ad about Obama wanting to bring the media to the troops? (Conservative answer: Even if the specifics are off, Obama was still wrong.) Regardless, he's got a new ad up trying to portray Obama as a political version of Britney or Paris (oh, how the McCainiacs wish there was Berlin Hilton or Berliny Spears). So, is the McCain campaign trying to paint Obama as "uppity"? Or are they just going Harold Ford on him? Libs say the ad simply makes Big McC look either ridiculous or like C. McC-gomery Burns. Conservatives disagree, of course. The important point, one conservative argues, is that they're closing the Obama money gap by getting the media to run their commercials over and over and over.

Blog Buzz: McCain Attacks Obama With the Troops, and Vice Presidential Speculation Grows Odder

John McCain's campaign is running a new ad accusing Barack Obama of blowing off a visit to wounded troops to go shoot some hoop. The ad is false, so why isn't the press saying so? And is the Obama campaign scared of going after McCain? And Is Obama McCain's pińata? But does the Mc-flailing make sense? McCain wasn't always in favor of using the military to score political points. Oh, and by the way: The ad is being run for insiders. (Don't worry, voters, we'll endlessly repeat the message, so you don't have to actually see the ad.)

Artists Abroad For Obama

Even though they can't cast votes in November, artists around the globe are cranking out tunes in homage to the Democratic presidential candidate. Latin-Grammy-nominated Don Omar transformed Obama's surname into the upbeat Reggaeton song, "Como Se Dice," and collaborated with the Cuban band Yerba Buena and over a dozen other Latin stars on "Podemos Con Obama" ("We Can With Obama"). Jamaican crooners are particularly starry-eyed for the politician, with Tyrical's "The Obama Song," Cocoa Tea's "Barack Obama" and Mavado's "We Need Barack" (which mixes Obama's speeches with reggae beats). Grenada-born Calypso singer Mighty Sparrow is working on an entire album of Obama songs, following his hit "Barack the Magnificent."

Blog Buzz: The Never-Ending Clark-McCain Squabble and McCain-Romney?

L'Affaire Clark rolls into its third day (in case you've been too busy cleaning out your Swift Boat to follow the news, The Fix sums up where we've been so far) and the McCain campaign sets up another conference call defending their candidate McMilitary McRecord. And McCain supporters continue to make the case that Clark was not a political lone gunman. Was Wes Clark Swift Boating McCain? "No!" say McCain supporters because the Swift Boaters were right (whereas Clark supporters say no because the Swift Boaters were wrong). Speaking of military records, Clark's is now under fire. Clark, meanwhile, refuses to retreat and keeps charging forward (generally into the path of oncoming television cameras). Is it helpful? Certainly he's started conversations about what exactly McCain's military record qualifies him for.

Blog Buzz: Georgia, Penn, and Obama the Pork Artist

Liberals worry that John McCain is beating the drama drums (stupidly), and is doing so with the help of an adviser, Randy Scheuenemann, whose past experience with Georgia is not helpful. Matthew Yglesias argues that the fact that Russia is not actually re-creating the Soviet Union is a knock against people who suggested that it was Nazi Germany. Conservatives argue that Obama should start beating something—drums, whatever—rather than sitting quietly like...Bush. (Both McCain and Obama, by the way, favor NATO membership for Georgia.) And it turns out that the U.S. government had a sense of what was coming, just not its magnitude (maybe we shouldn't just go with implicit understandings with the Russians, eh?). Hot Air's Allahpundit sees a reach for Reagan in McCain's stance.

Blog Buzz: Afghanistan, Oil, and Immigration

Both Barack Obama and John McCain are popping up all over the blogs because of their plans for Afghanistan. In Obama's Monday op-ed in the New York Times, he said that his top priority after ending the war in Iraq would be to increase the presence of U.S. troops in Afghanistan to fight al Qaeda and the Taliban. Some liberal bloggers approve; others are unconvinced that his strategy is plausible, while others are simply stumped. Conservative bloggers agree on the importance of finishing work in Afghanistan but are very critical of Obama's "incoherent" op-ed and "hollow rhetoric". McCain has also called for a surge in troops in Afghanistan.

John McCain Outspending Barack Obama in Search Engine Advertising

According to an exclusive story in the National Journal Online, John McCain has outspent Barack Obama for two consecutive months in search engine advertising.

Blog Buzz: The McCain Budget, Obama and Abortion, and the Invesco Field Speech

TPM's Josh Marshall can only laugh at the McCain pledge, noting that the numbers backing it up are, well, nonexistent. Others are equally bemused by the McBudget plan. (And of course it gets some applause from the right.) Some of the savings, the McCain campaign says, will come from winning in Iraq, an assertion met with, ahem, skepticism in left quarters and other places. (Is that a faith-based budget initiative?) Meanwhile, Hot Air's Ed Morrissey has a write-up of the McCain campaign's conference call on economics. Politico's Jonathan Martin notes what the call revealed (or didn't) about McCain and entitlements. Who do you think would do a better job with the economy? Post your thoughts.

Blog Buzz: Special Wesley Clark Swift-Boating Edition

Were Wes Clark's remarks about John McCain's Vietnam War experiences out of line? Of all the things one can criticize McCain for, The Huffington Post's Robert Guttman notes, "lacking command experience" doesn't seem very important. And Andrew Sullivan on the Atlantic's Daily Dish accuses Clark of "swift-boating McCain," maintaining that McCain's military record (like Kerry's) should be revered, period. But Jon Soltz, another Huffington Post blogger, believes Clark is "100 percent absolutely right" and should not back down. TPM's Josh Marshall thinks the idea that Clark's comment was a case of "swift-boating" is both inane and a reflection of how out of touchthe D.C. media bigwigs are. Other Obama-ites agree, pointing out that Clark wasn't questioning McCain's service but rather the manner in which it translates to presidential credentials

Is John McCain or Barack Obama Winning the YouTube Vote?

Yesterday, Rasmussen Reports said that the "news you watch says a lot about how you'll vote." According to the pollster, 87 percent of Fox News viewers say they are likely to vote for John McCain, while 65 percent of those who watch CNN and 63 percent of those who watch MSNBC plan to support Barack Obama in November.

Flickring here, twittering there

ON JULY 30th John McCain’s campaign released an anti-Barack Obama advertisement on the McCain YouTube channel. The ad compared Mr Obama’s celebrity to that of Paris Hilton and Britney Spears. By August 13th it had been viewed 2m times, TV and newspapers had taken it up, a bikini-clad Paris had launched a spirited riposte (“Thanks for the endorsement, white-haired dude”) and it was still the most viewed clip on the McCain channel. In reply, Mr Obama’s campaign launched “Low Road Express”, a website that mocked Mr McCain’s reputation for straight talk. On July 31st the Republican National Committee launched “Obama Audacity Watch”, to track less-than-glowing stories and clips about him.

Blog Buzz: Accusations of White House Forgery on Iraq, John McCain Gets More Media Coverage, Barack Obama's Energy Week

Ron Suskind's new book claims that a 2001 letter supposedly written by the head of Iraqi intelligence to Saddam Hussein was forged by the White House. The letter supports the Hussein-al Qaeda link used to justify the Iraq war, but one blogger was more interested in another reference involving uranium shipped from Niger to Baghdad. Liberal bloggers aren't sure if the claim is true but say with relish that it doesn't look good for the White House. Suskind himself points out in the Huffington Post that "everything in the book is on record."

McCain Releases Technology Platform

I Don't Believe in Imaginary Property writes "John McCain has finally released a technology platform. Most of it is the same old stuff; lower corporate taxes, protect children from porn, and avoid Internet regulation unless 'necessary.' Alas, in his view, helping the RIAA's War on Sharing is necessary to stop the 'global epidemic' of piracy, while Net Neutrality is something he 'does not believe in.' Ars Technica has a review of McCain's platform." A brief analysis is also available from Federal Computer Week. In addition to the technology policy, McCain has also released a paper describing his stance on security and privacy. We've previously contrasted his views with those of Barack Obama. Obama's technology policies are also available online.

Obama, McCain agree on many once-divisive issues

MIDDLE MEN: Sen. Barack Obama has been tacking to the center on such issues as trade, government wiretapping policy and the death penalty. Sen. John McCain's defiance of the GOP party line has more closely aligned him with Obama on some issues and upped his centrist appeal.

Poll: McCain halves Obama's lead

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. may have cut into Democratic presidential rival Barack Obama's poll lead because of the Russia-Georgia conflict, negative ads and the public's concern about Obama as commander-in-chief.

Blog Buzz: A Three-Day Democratic Convention, Obama-ntana, Barack-Flops, and Veepstakes

The LA Times is reporting that the Dems are considering ending their convention on Wednesday instead of Thursday, which would piss off those who have made their travel plans already. (It might also irk Denver officials who say that it's not going to happen.) They think it might get them an extra bounce, but is that desperation? But Atlantic's Marc Ambinder says the convo wouldn't end early, it would just have the final day in another venue. Dem home run contest at Coors Field?

McCain, Obama talk before evangelicals

John McCain, Pastor Rick Warren and Barack Obama greet the crowd at Warren's Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, Calif., on Saturday.

The Politics of Space: Obama Wants to Increase NASA Funding

Over the weekend, Democratic senator Barack Obama made a public statement during his presidential campaign trail in Titusville, Florida. Whilst responding to a question about oceanic research, Obama elaborated on his plans for the future of NASA. Previously, there have been hints that a possible Obama Presidency would see a reduction in space funding in favour of a boost in education spending. However, Saturday's statement was followed by some detailed text on Obama's campaign blog outlining his priorities for the US dominance in space, the possibility of extending the Shuttle's operations and speeding up development of the Constellation program…

Birth certificate "painter" mocks Obama claim that image proves authenticity

with the Daily Kos -- the blog site that published the supposedly authentic Barack Hussein Obama birth certificate and his own birth certificate manipulations in the same June 12 post, Jay McKinnon, aka opendna, says he manipulated the Obama birth certificate to create a blank Hawaii birth certificate as a "template," supposedly for a John McCain birth certificate. But he says it was not an attempt at deception but a "lame joke" that he now regrets.
