Blog Buzz Afghanistan Oil and Immigration: related news

Blog Buzz: Afghanistan, Oil, and Immigration

Both Barack Obama and John McCain are popping up all over the blogs because of their plans for Afghanistan. In Obama's Monday op-ed in the New York Times, he said that his top priority after ending the war in Iraq would be to increase the presence of U.S. troops in Afghanistan to fight al Qaeda and the Taliban. Some liberal bloggers approve; others are unconvinced that his strategy is plausible, while others are simply stumped. Conservative bloggers agree on the importance of finishing work in Afghanistan but are very critical of Obama's "incoherent" op-ed and "hollow rhetoric". McCain has also called for a surge in troops in Afghanistan.

(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 22, 2008 ) DALLAS, Texas - TwinTrader.com announces the publication of ‘Peak Oil May Sprout “Space Program-size” Funding’ Investors can view all of the investment articles and publications for free by visiting: http://www.TwinTrader.com Peak Oil May Sprout “Space Program-size” Funding ”The hope of oil retreating back to the $30 level has since been shattered as fantastic and naĂŻve wishful thinking. Steve Forbe’s prediction last year of $30 oil has proven to be way off the mark. Many other “well-informed” pundits of the “peak oil” theory have turned mute, recently, and for very good reasons. It appears that the peak oil theorists are winning the debate this year, not with mere talking points, but with hard price and inventory levels data reported each day, and each week in the case of oil inventories.

United States Oil and Gas Files Patent Pending for a Simple Fiber-Optic Seismometer

AUSTIN, Texas--(Business Wire)-- United States Oil and Gas Corp. (Pink Sheets: USOG) is pleased to announce it has a patent pending on A SIMPLE FIBER-OPTIC SEISMOMETER FOR RUGGED ENVIRONMENTS that will dramatically reduce the cost of seismic sensor arrays having the fidelity and reliability necessary for permanent down-hole and seafloor installations. Breaking Down Blog Spam Malware

Jesper Johansson, co-author of Windows Vista Security: Securing Vista Against Malicious Attacks, recently wrote an article in The Register which dissects a new type of threat. Anyone with a blog has probably seen blog spam- comments made on blog posts which have little or nothing to do with the actual blog post, but contain links to spam-related web sites. I have spam filters in place, so I rarely even see the blog spam posts. They are an annoyance, and I simply delete them in periodic batches. However, Jesper did stop to look at the spam and noticed that a new breed was becoming prevalent. The new breed, rather than just leading to some annoying spam site, are actually malware attacks. For a complete breakdown of the threat, and Jesper's dissection and analysis, check out Anatomy of a Malware Scam.

The discussion of statistics being weird is valid. In my blog post in June on the ADA update, I pointed it out as well. After a lot of digging on veterans and U.S. govt websites, I couldn't find a resolution. I'll paste below the relevant part of my blog because I can't actually link to it. (sorry). BEGIN BLOG POST EXERPT: "Regarding disabled American veterans, a 2007 Census report said that there are 6.1 million veterans with a disability, with about 3.5 million of them over 65 years of age. However, according to the Associated Press, the number of DAVs has increased 25% (to 2.9 million) since 2001, because of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. I don't know why the AP article and the Census figures were so far off on the number of DAVs. According to the AP article, there are "755,000 veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

Blogged.com Adds Blog Article Search and Improves Recommendations

There are a number of blog search tools out there, and some have become controversial for their human-powered curator process and simplistic style. But such an approach has its merits when you look at the broad appeal of blog recommendations and curated suggestions. There are those end users that would like to be able to find blog content that’s not technology related, and doesn’t come from self-promotional platforms that are often found on some memes and other blog search engines.

New blog title, new blog theme

Those of you who track this blog will have noticed a couple of things over the last while: First and not least, I haven’t been posting much and secondly the title has changed from Roads to SOA to FinanceTech Directions. The two changes are closely related as after some lengthy discussions with my friends at ebizq, I have decided to relaunch this blog. However, it will now focus exclusively on the financial services industry and broaden its scope to include all of enterprise infrastructure as it applies to that industry.
