The left side of the blogosphere loves the video of John McCain's chat with Jamie Rubin in which he said that "sooner or later we are going to have to deal with" Hamas. The right side of the blogosphere argues that Rubin mischaracterized both McCain's criticism of Obama and his comments about talking to Hamas. NRO's Jim Geraghty found other video of apparently the same time period where McCain says Hamas has to give up on destroying Israel before any talks can take place. RedState's Soren Dayton says that there's a real difference between dealing with Hamas and talking to Iran. Marc Ambinder says that whether to talk to Iran is in fact the salient issue. And Andrew Sullivan says he agrees with McCain that talking to Hamas is fine and that Obama is off-base on the issue.

TOM HENDERSON quickly learned the difference between veterinary training and veterinary practice when, fresh from university, he was dealt an anthrax outbreak in Tatura, Victoria, in his native Australia. He says he was on the front line, witnessing its horrors first-hand. "The first positive case I saw really hit home," he says. But theres nothing you can do to prevent it spreading except for vaccinating. In a way, it was just as important for us to calm down the farmers and help them to understand what was happening." Fortunately, the authorities in Victoria were able to draw on recent experience to restrict the outbreak to a 16-kilometre radius. "That was one positive. Because the previous outbreak was fresh in peoples memories, it was over relatively quickly," says Henderson.

I guess the time is now to be saying our goodbyes to Frankie. Word initially was that he was available until Easter, then it was up to the Cheltenham game but as he wasn¿t even on the bench on Saturday at Hendon I think we have to assume that coming on against Hastings was his last knockings before his move to New York to take up a coaching position

mikesd81 writes "Wired is running a story about GoDaddy shutting down a police watchdog site called RateMyCop. However, GoDaddy can't seem to give a consistent answer as for why. From the article: 'RateMyCop founder Gino Sesto says he was given no notice of the suspension. When he called GoDaddy, the company told him that he'd been shut down for suspicious activity. When Sesto got a supervisor on the phone, the company changed its story and claimed the site had surpassed its 3 terabyte bandwidth limit, a claim that Sesto says is nonsense. "How can it be overloaded when it only had 80,00 page views today, and 400,000 yesterday?" Sesto says police can post comments as well, and a future version of the site will allow them to authenticate themselves to post rebuttals more prominently.

Dixie_dean writes "Microsoft researchers are developing a way to enable you to capture every moment of your life and store it on your computer. The principal researcher with Microsoft's research arm, Gordon Bell, is developing a way for everyone to remember those special moments. 'The nine-year project, called MyLifeBits, has Bell supplementing his own memory by collecting as much information as he can about his life. He's trying to store a lifetime on his laptop. He's gone on to collect images of every Web page he's ever visited, television shows he's watched, recorded phone conversations, and images and audio from conference sessions, along with his e-mail and instant messages. Calculating that he saves about a gigabyte of information every month, he noted that he tries to only save photos of a megabyte or less.

Prosecution witness Joseph D. "Zigzag" Marzah remained on the stand today and under cross-examination from Lead Defense Counsel Courtenay Griffiths. In the course of his testimony, Marzah gave jarring accounts of engaging in cannibalism, which he said he had done at the orders of Charles Taylor. Griffiths appeared pursued several main points: that there were inconsistencies between what Marzah told prosecution investigators and attorneys in the past and what he was telling the court at the trial; that Marzah was testifying against Taylor because he didn't want to be prosecuted himself; that Marzah was exaggerating his importance in Taylor's organization and was not senior enough to take orders from Taylor; that Marzah had been disciplined for abusing civilians; that Marzah was simply lying; and that Liberia and Sierra Leone were chaotic p

where Mulong Palis, a dear friend from college, was being treated for a more serious strain of dengue — pirouetting before him, trying very hard to bring him some sense of joy, some sense of life. I continued my fleeting flamboyance, never mind if my arabesque was short and faulty. At least, in my own little weird way, I was able to make the patient laugh when I visited him. He had not been smiling for a few days ever since he was confined in the hospital. But I came in with the gift of joy and laughter. He smiled. He laughed. I never knew my pretentious ballerina stints — while wearing that invisible tutu — could somehow aid in healing him.

Speaking today on the theme of culture I would like to refer to the wonderful figure of John Paul II who was so respected in the whole world, especially in the world of Christian culture. Before he became a priest he had been an actor and poet, and thats why he understood the artistic world well; he knew the role of culture in mans formation and he also knew the philosophy of culture perfectly well. He often referred to that in his life. In 1980, during the UNESCO meeting in Paris, he said, I am a son of the nation that disappeared on Europes maps but thanks to culture it found its place again, among the living and existing nations. Culture is a very important carrier of reality. One can speak of fine arts, architecture, literature, music, etc.

The image of the intrepid Lonely Planet researcher has taken quite a knock with the news that one writer copied or invented whole sections of his books. Thomas Kohnstamm claimed he had sex with a waitress at a restaurant he was reviewing, and didn't even go to one country he was writing about. Well, he may have "misspoken" about this latter claim, as Lonely Planet says he was hired to write about the country's history, not to travel there as a reviewer. As for the other misdemeanor, I used to work for Lonely Planet and, among other things, reviewed restaurants, which was exciting, but not in that way.

This is the story of a Mac application developer (okay – it’s about two of them) who set out on a quest to find an application development tool based on Java so his boss would let him develop on the Mac platform, which he loved. There was only one catch – he had to find a tool that was fast. Traditional Java programming was going to take waaaay too long to convert the internal custom programs that had been written in an old 4GL. But the boss still wanted the excellent user interfaces that he was used to – because our hero was good on the Mac and could make the screens look “pretty.” If possible – the boss wanted the impossible – make the application run on a desktop AND over the Web – “just in case.” Here’s the story of our intrepid hero and how he searched, and found, a way to meet all the “Dilbert boss-li

When I was at school, there was a guy in my year who had every natural advantage. He was tall, blonde, blue-eyed and handsome, came from a wealthy and well-connected family, was captain of cricket and rugby, got straight A's in his O-levels, did something like five A-levels and got A's in those too, and was on the fast track for Oxbridge. Like everyone else I really wanted to hate him for being a smug over-achieving git, but in fact he was also a really nice and likeable guy. Call me weird if you will, but the top models in Canon IXUS range of digital compacts often remind me of him.
