According to a top market intelligence and research firm, car dealers are in for a shock. IDC, a Framingham, Massachusetts-based information technology source, says the online used car market in the United States is on the brink of explosive growth, and the big losers in this shift are likely to be car dealers. IDC estimates the online share of all used car sales will jump from under three percent last year to almost 40 percent in 2004. However, the firm warns brick-and-mortar car dealers could put up a roadblock in the markets development.

COredneck sends us a NYTimes story (registration may be required) about an Internet community solving a crime in less than 48 hours. An auto dealer in Calgary lends a car for a test drive — a 1991 Nissan Skyline GT-R. The test driver and another person don't return the car. The dealer then files a police report, but also posts a message about the stolen car on Beyond.ca, an automotive fan board. Many people who read the board keep their eyes out and find the car. They also use Facebook to find the suspect and his high school; and they use Google Maps to pinpoint the thief's location. They film the collar and post the video on Beyond.ca. The dealer says, "This guy has worldwide recognition for being a car thief for the rest of his life. The Internet is not going away.

When I was a toddler, my parents were friends with a couple who kept a pet monkey in a cage in their dining room. Looking back on this as an adult, it seems… unwise. But I’m sure that as a kid I thought that this was The Coolest Thing Ever. They used to tease the monkey by dangling car keys just out of reach. Then one day I gave the monkey my dad’s car keys, and he (i.e. the monkey) refused to give them back. I’m sure that I found this hilarious, but I cannot remember the incident at all; I only know about it because my mother once used it as an example of what a trouble-maker I had been as a child. The lesson: never give a monkey your car keys. (Corollary: never give a monkey a gun.)

Since I started writing professionally, I have been asked by many friends to open a blog. The reason for their request is that the blog, unlike a weekly column, can be used randomly, instead of weekly. Furthermore, I can write whatever I want about whatever topic, I can even use curse words if the need be, as there is no way of censoring a blog. Most importantly, blogs illicit near immediate reaction from the readers, and many people find it easier to respond to a blog under an anonymous blogger name, than

Rather, it is made out of discarded circuit boards," said Su Chun-pin, the director of the Taoyuan County Department of Environmental Protection, while pointing to the likeness of the folk god. Su said a number of discarded items, such as used circuit boards from computers, can be re-used to make gorgeous artistic items. However, Su pointed out that the artistic works are strictly for viewing. If the items were set aflame, they would produce the toxin dioxin, causing pollution.
