snydeq writes "Fatal Exception's Neil McAllister raises questions regarding the transforming nature of the Web now that Tim Berners-Lee's early vision has been supplanted by today's much more complex model. AJAX, Google Web Toolkit, Flash and Silverlight all have McAllister asking, 'Is [the Web] still the Web if you can't navigate directly to specific content? Is it still the Web if the content can't be indexed and searched? Is it still the Web if you can only view the application on certain clients or devices? Is it still the Web if you can't view source?' Such questions bely a much bigger question for Web developers, McAllister writes. If today's RIAs no longer resemble the 'Web,' then should we be shoehorning these apps into the Web's infrastructure, or is the problem that the client platforms simply aren't evolving fast enough to meet

Amazon.com's Web site experienced problems in North America for more than two hours in the middle of the day Friday because of system issues, the online retailer said. Shortly after 10 a.m. PDT, the company's retail Web site shut down, giving an error code to anyone visiting it, according to Keynote Systems, a California company that measures Web site performance. The impact on sales from the blackout was not immediately known. Shawn White, Keynote's director of external operations, said an error in the configuration of the Web site might have caused the shutdown. The Web site was back up to 60 percent capability around noon. By 1 p.m., it was at 100 percent, White said.

This week, online music retailer Rhapsody has launched a new DRM-free music store in the US, allowing users to download unprotected 256kbps MP3 files for $0.99 per track (or $9.99 per album). While Rhapsody is just the latest in a string of online music stores to offer DRM-free music (including Amazon's MP3 store and Apple's iTunes Plus), it bangs another nail in the coffin of DRM in the online music business. We think the move away from DRM will benefit consumers, device vendors and online music retailers, by removing one of the biggest barriers to consumer acceptance of digital music sales.

Animoto, a site that lets users edit musical slideshows, has taken an unspecified investment from Amazon.com (NSDQ: AMZN). The NYC-based company lets users upload their photos and choose a song—the system then assembles it into a slideshow or music video. The service launched in August of last year and claims 150,000 users. Not surprisingly, it touts a Facebook app with 750,000 users. The slideshow space alone is very competitive. In addition to Slide, there are plenty of smaller ones. As for Amazon’s participation: don’t necessarily assume this will lead to a strategic relationship. (Indie music retailer Amie Street, also invested in by Amazon, doesn’t have one.) Animoto is a customer of Amazon’s web services, which is supposedly how the two sides came together.
