notthatwillsmith writes "We all know that Google purges known 'attack sites' — sites that deliver viruses, spyware, or other malware to visitors — from its index of searchable sites, but that doesn't stop the text ad giant from happily selling ads linking to those sites. One wouldn't think it would be any more difficult to cross-reference the list of purged sites with the list of advertisers than it was for the main search index, would it?" To be fair, the article says that Google shut down the ad when notified of it; and no other examples of linked malware are offered. Was this a one-time oversight?

Rarely has there been a rock star as maligned for a single incident as Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich. In 2000, he became the poster child for bands lashing out at the online world when the band sued Napster following the leak of “I Disappear” via the peer-to-peer service. Ulrich stands by what he did, but wants fans to know he did it for the right reasons. “Nine out of 10 people go, ‘What was that about? It was about money.’ Fuck you — it wasn’t about money. It was about control,” explains Ulrich. “I’ll give away all my shit for free. But I’ll decide when and where and how.” Click below for more from Ulrich’s conversation with Rolling Stone’s David Fricke, including why he lives his life more openly and how tours have changed since 1983.

Failing to get the memo that it's 2008, Wal-Mart has decided to get even more aggressive in battling the 'pre-mature' leakage of their Black Friday circular ads. It would appear that Wal-Mart's lawyers need to come up with excuses to keep billing Wal-Mart every year around this time. Despite the fact that Wal-Mart employees admit that sites posting "Black Friday Ads" help drive more business, Wal-Mart's hired guns keep threatening sites for posting the ads, falsely claiming a copyright on the content (hint: you can't copyright prices). This year, they've stepped it up a notch and are claiming that it's illegal to even link to a site that has such content.

Oh man, are these ads awesome. No ads really become outdated faster than ads for video game systems, with their quickly-antiquated technology, ridiculous music and hilarious editing. And boy, was Sega aggressive: "If you're not playing these games, you're a giant loser!" That may have been so, but unfortunately for Sega, there were way more Giant Losers than Cool Kids. As corny as it looks now, it's the same in-your-face style used today, where the marketplace is strangely similar to the early '90s, with warm fuzzy Nintendo in the dominant position, and more edgy aggressors trying to steal market share. Will we laugh as hard at today's commercials as we do to the following Sega ads of yesteryear?

Even with the first Android device set to launch in a matter of days, Google (NSDQ: GOOG) still has the iPhone and the inherent opportunities it presents high on its mind. The company has been meeting with ad agencies recently to show off different ways to integrate advertising into searches conducted on the phone, AdWeek reports. Google is working to give advertisers the ability to integrate iPhone ad groups into their regular search campaign. The idea is to give ad agencies an opportunity to create iPhone-specific ads that might draw in more interest than ads simply repurposed from online ads created primarily for PCs. For example, companies could place ads that wold allow users to click to call. If implemented, this would be the first time Google has allowed advertisers to make messages specific to mobile searches, however advertisers
