Circuit City Stores (CC) NewsBite - Circuit City Tumbles after BBI Drops Bid

Circuit City Stores Inc. (CC) opened at 2.22. So far today, the stock has hit a low of 2.10 and a high of 2.27. CC is now trading at 2.18, down 0.37 (-16.67%). The stock hit its 52 week high of 15.33 in July and set its 52 week low of 2.10 today. CC has been moving downwards for the past year. Circuit City Stores shares have been taking a hit after Blockbuster Inc. (BBI) withdrew its bid for the company, citing "market conditions." In April, Blockbuster had offered to buy Circuit City for at least $6 a share, or more than $1 billion. Technical indicators for the stock are bearish and steady while S&P gives CC a neutral 3 STARS (out of 5) hold rating. We will just watch this one for now. There are no trades that we like for CC. San Francisco DA Discloses City's Passwords

snydeq writes "The office of San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris has made public close to 150 usernames and passwords used by various departments to connect to the city's VPN. The passwords were filed this week as Exhibit A in a court document arguing against a reduction in $5 million bail in the case against Terry Childs. Though they placed the passwords in the public record, city prosecutors do seem to think that they are sensitive. InfoWorld's Paul Venezia, who has been following the case closely, provides further analysis of the technical details in the city's case. 'By themselves, [the passwords] would not be enough to allow anyone to access the network via VPN,' Venezia writes, 'but the fact that the city entered them into evidence is quite shocking.

VP Candidate Is Pro-RIAA, Anti-Privacy - Biden's tech history doesn't align with Obama's beliefs

Barack Obama has named Joe Biden as the Democratic vice presidential candidate. CNET offers an interesting article reviewing Bidens tech history and showing that his legislative past is filled with pro-RIAA, anti-privacy moves that are in direct contrast to the sentiments that Obama has expressed. Biden has backed bills that expand copyright law and urged the Justice Department to use taxpayersmoney to monitor and prosecute illegal filesharing. He is a friend not only to RIAA and MPAA but also to the FBI who he has supported with anti-encryption laws that are in keeping with the FBIs desire to engage in wiretapping. In regards to net neutrality, Biden does not agree with Obamas supportof handing pre-emptive regulatory authority to the Federal Communications Commissionbecause he believes that public disapproval of any violations t

Blockbuster Looks At Circuit City's Books; Ditches Acquisition Offer

We were one of a very small number of people who actually saw some logic behind Blockbuster bidding for Circuit City -- though, it seemed unlikely that Blockbuster viewed the purchase in the same way we did. Most people assumed (probably correctly) that Blockbuster didn't really have much of a plan at all, other than to merge the two struggling companies and have an even bigger mess on their hands. Blockbuster has now withdrawn the offer to buy Circuit City, gamely claiming that it has to do with "market conditions" and a better understanding of just how awful Circuit City's books appear to be. That's press release talk. What's more likely is that Blockbuster realized that everyone was right: it would screw up the merger and make a bad situation worse.

A Look Back at Circuit City Stock Performance

In March of last year (and again in the summer) Circuit City announced various new initiatives to cut expenses, improve sales, and jump start the process of turning the company around that began in '06. Let's take a quick look at how the stock has performed since the company announced cost cutting measures that included firing 3,400 of their most successful salespeople so they could hire less experienced people (or any of the fired ones who were desperate enough to come back) at lower wages on March 28, 2007:

Best Western Loses Details On 8 Million Customers

Albanach writes "Scotland's Sunday Herald newspaper has an exclusive report that the Best Western hotel chain has lost the personal details of each and every guest who has stayed at any of its 1300 hotels in the past 12 months. This amounts to details on 8 million customers and includes information such as name, address, credit card details and employment details. The data even includes future booking details, causing speculation that homes could be targeted for burglary when it's anticipated they will be unoccupied. A Best Western spokesperson is quoted as saying 'Best Western took immediate action to disable the compromised log-in account in question. We are currently in the process of working with our credit card partners to ensure that all relevant procedural standards are met, and that the interests of our guests are protected.

"Phoney" iPhone Lines in Poland

On Friday, Apple's iPhone went on sale in 21 other countries, including India and Poland as iPhone 3G Rollout Phase II began. While demand for the iPhone 3G has been loud and clear in many countries so far (unlike 3G service on the device), the iPhone isn't quite such a hot commodity in the newly launched set countries. For one, Telekomunikacja Polska (TP), which France Telecom (whose wireless division is Orange) has a controlling stake in, has admitted it used actors to form fake lines, trying to make people believe that demand for the iPhone was higher than it actually was (see above).

Phoenix Digs Deep for 90th Day on Mars

The next sample of Martian soil being grabbed for analysis is coming from a trench about three times deeper than any other trench NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander has dug. On Tuesday, August 26, the scoop on the lander's robotic arm will pick up a sample of soil from the bottom of a trench called "Stone Soup" which is about 18 centimeters, or 7 inches deep. Tuesday will be the 90th Martian day or sol that the lander has been on the Red Planet, which was the original amount of time set for Phoenix's primary mission. NASA has extended the mission through September, but the clock is ticking for the plucky little lander and the oncoming winter at Mars' north polar region.

Madden NFL 2009 Xbox 360 Review

20 years of existence is a long time for any videogame series, let alone one that sees a new release each and every one of those 20 years. I of course refer to the Madden NFL series from EASports, which has seen various ups and downs in its lengthy existence, ranging from troubling times in heated battle with competing NFL games, to what we have today in the 'exclusive rights' era of sports gaming. This NFL exclusivity that EA acquired for their flagship sporting title has brought upon mixed results for the NFL gaming enthusiasts. On one hand, EA are given access to material otherwise not available with their now very close relationship to the NFL, but on the other hand, the overriding theme has been lackluster efforts since Madden became the only NFL game out there and made its way first to the Xbox 360 and then the PS3, arguably caused
