Wikis, blogs, social networks, RSS, and "engagement" are increasingly common phrases used in today's social marketing conversations. Yet lurking out there is a term marketers don't want to hear -- that of splog. The term 'splog' has been around for more than two years, yet there is little awareness of it and the effect it can have on social media marketing, especially Social Media Measurement. Xbox Media Center Renamed "Plex" (And Looking Hotter Than Ever)

An independent Mac fork of Xbox Media Centera lauded cross-platform solution for streaming mediahas just gotten a neat new name: "Plex." (That's short for "cineplex.") But we know how it is. You use Front Row and think it's great. Before you go back into your Apple shell, check out this Aeon skin for Plex. Currently in alpha release, it features a fluid wallpaper effect á la iPod coupled with the simplicity of Delicious Library's shelf organization. Our own Brian Lam said to me, "I've never seen a Media Center UI look so nice." I have to agree. (Well, I actually do agree. But I think that I have to agree, too.) Are You Missing the Social Media Marketing Party?

By now you've heard of a myriad social media Web sites like MySpace and Facebook. And, if you're like many business professionals, you probably have a fair notion that these social networking sites are places where (mostly) teens and 20-somethings share photos and write on "walls." Similarly, LinkedIn and Plaxo are two social networking sites where (mostly) professionals share contacts; pose and get questions answered; and even look for career advice from fellow professionals. But can all these widgets, blogs, profiles and Web technologies really help your business? And, more importantly, if you don't jump on board now, will you be left behind?

Social bookmarking is saving us a lot of time and energy that wed usually spend scanning our RSS feeds or (the shock and horror of it all) actually visiting sites daily to find out whats hot in the industry we work in along with our other interests. Not learning about social bookmarking is nothing short of surrendering to a changing online world.

WHAT IS A BLOG WORTH? ASK GAWKER

If you're any kind of online publisher - a traditional outlet looking to learn about online media, or a blog network looking to grow - you could do a lot worse than to follow the career of Nick Denton, a former traditional journalist who has become a new-media mogul thanks to the Gawker Media network of blogs. Denton has been conducting a kind of ongoing media workshop for the past couple of years, right out in the open (more or less).
