New Sony Alpha Flagship Flash

Sony is expanding its alpha system of accessories to include the new HVL-F58AM flash unit with exceptional features for versatile and flexible external lighting control. This new flash features a new Quick Shift Bounce system. It offers more creative ways to achieve lighting, flash and bounce angles. The flash head can pivot 90 degrees left and right on a horizontal axis in addition to the conventional up and down vertical adjustment. With this system, the camera and flash unit can keep the same orientation regardless of portrait or landscape shooting. This gives a higher degree of flexibility when arranging the direction of light. For example, you can take full advantage of the flash unit’s built-in bounce card even during portrait shots since the flash head can maintain the same orientation as it would in the landscape position.

Public Art: Olafur Eliasson's Waterfalls Transform New York

The buzz on "The New York City Waterfalls" was loud enough that a boatload of reporters chugged out into New York Harbor one recent steamy morning with the installation's artist, Olafur Eliasson, and Mayor Michael Bloomberg for a first, up-close look at the project: four cascades, ranging in height from 90 to 120 feet, installed at sites along the East River. The falls work by an elaborate system that pumps water up from the river, then lets it tumble down a tower of scaffolding. Not that you need to get on a boat to see them. There are good vantage spots along the river—and that's the point, says the 41-year-old Danish Icelandic artist. He wants New Yorkers to explore the waterfront that most of them have turned their backs on, to see their city in a new way.

Olympus and Panasonic Launch Micro Four Thirds System For Smaller, Rangefinder-Like SLRs

Olympus and Panasonic rolled out a new standard for interoperable lenses and camera bodies today in Japan, which means we could see yet another new camera category smashed in between consumer, pro-sumer, con-fessional, and all the rest. The Micro Four Thirds system is basically a slimmed down version of the two companies' Four Thirds system, which allowed member companies to build lenses and bodies that were digital-only and interoperable between brands. And while the new Micro version may not sound like much, it could result in the revival of an all-digital, Leica-like quasi rangefinder system with tons of high-quality lens choices.

In this proposed rulemaking, the Department proposes to exempt portions of this system of records from one or more provisions of the Privacy Act because of criminal, civil, and administrative enforcement requirements.

New Cuil Search Engine Unveiled

A new way to search the web was unveiled on Sunday. The new service, called Cuil (sounds like "cool"), is the brainchild of four former Google search experts. What Cuil brings to the table is a new way to search based on each page's content instead of relying on links and traffic patterns. Cuil claims that its technology can index a greater portion of the Web far cheaper and faster than can Google. In fact, Cuil claims to have indexed 120 billion Web pages compared to the 40 billion currently indexed by Google. Another difference is that Cuil claims it has no need to store user information based on previous web searches because it focuses on content and not click history. Whether it can post a serious threat to Google remains to be seen as challenging the giant is a daunting task as even the likes of Microsoft have discovered.
