The numbers of cycles of preimplantation genetic diagnosis or screening are rising steadily in Europe with over 2,700 reported in 2004 (the most recent year for which data are available). Fertility centres are able to screen for a growing number of genetically related conditions, but what should doctors do if no embryos without the targeted condition are available for transfer and the parents request that affected embryos should be transferred instead?

I just want to ask you one quick question. Are your blogs profitable? I told you it would be quick. It's real simple to answer. Either your blogs are earning for you, or their not. I will tell you something here and I will be blunt. If your blogs are earning you some type of income then you need to listen up. If your blogs are not earning you some sort of income then you DEFINETLY need to listen up. Pay attention close to what I say and maybe the next time someone asks you that question instead of saying yes or no you can say "HECK YES THEY ARE"! Now I again will be blunt. Some people consider this totally unethical and blackhat. I leave that for you to decide. A vast majority of the people that will tell you this is "blackhat", are not earning "peanuts" from their blogging efforts.

When you first install Operations Manager 2007, you may be a bit overwhelmed with all the information that is available to you (if you could figure out what it is and how to find it!), and the fact that you have to forget most of the things you learned if you had MOM 2005. However, there is training available, several books are out - I may be a bit biased, but System Center Operations Manager 2007 Unleashed is the best one available, and there are also numerous utilities and software available for OpsMgr 2007, some of which is at no charge.

JagsLive sends in a story (in somewhat inflammatory prose) from The Inquirer, which links to many others; they have been following developments in the alleged NVidia quality "fiasco" for some time. "Hot on the heels of its denials that anything is wrong with the G92 and G94s comes another PCN [Product Change Notification] that shows the G92s and G92b are being changed for no reason. Yup, the problems that are plaguing G84 and G86 are the same that affect seemingly all 65nm and now 55nm NVidia parts... It is hard to overstate how bad this is. Basically every 65nm and 55nm NVidia part appears to be defective... We are hearing of early failure rates in the teens percent for 8800GTs and far higher for 9600GTs... To make matters worse, NVidia has a mound of unsold defective parts that they are going to bleed out into the channel along side of

If you have DSL or a T-* line you are basically guaranteed to have a UPS'd and generator powered internet connection since the telco's are required to have emergency power. Sure if you use an ilec they may not have an agreement to hook their DSLAM to the telco power plant and remote shelfs don't all have generators, but the chances are pretty good. The cable companies are also pretty good about it since they are now offering voice service (though it's definitely not to the level of the telco's).

If anyone doubted that this is going to be a weekend of worldwide mass hysteria, here's a clue: after a few hours there are no more iPhones 3G available for pre-order in the UK. O2's pre-ordering site was activated this morning andâafter being down for a few hours under the massive demandâit now says that there are no more available JesusPhones. So go, loot, stay at home this Friday, and don't forget to block your windows and doors or the fanzombies will eat you alive. [Thanks Mark and Jon]

Today we are going to look at a very nice case of the iPhone that is also available for the new iPhone 3G. The case is called the Griffin Wave for iPhone. Several colors are available and the case protects the screen and leaves all the controls easily accessible. The edges of the case are beveled so that they are comfortable against your ear and face when the phone is in use. When the Griffin Wave for iPhone is installed, it does add a bit of bulk to the phone, but not much. Obviously, you can no longer place the phone into the docking cradle when the case is on, but the sync/charge cable itself fits with the case installed without any issues.

Jul. 27--If you've ever spent any time fishing from a boat, you know that the glare off the water can be brutal. Things only get worse if, and when, your sunglasses go overboard, only to sink to the bottom of the lake. FishGillz Sunglass Co. has come up with a solution, however. The company is marketing a pair of sunglasses designed specifically for those who spend a lot of time on the water. They weigh just half an ounce while still offering 100 percent UV400 protection. The lenses are made by 3M Corp. from a high-impact, shatter proof material and are distortion free. The frames are composed of a flexible but durable polymer blend. They provide good clarity, too, and are available in eight sport-style frames. Suggested retail price is $49.

My gut response to this question is "No," and according to Totus Internet Marketing that's true. But even if Twitter doesn't help you with SEO it can be a good marketing tool if you are willing to take the time to use it well. Just setting up an RSS feed into Twitter won't help. In fact, it will only attract the attention of other spammers. But if you are willing to join the conversation you can use Twitter to also market your website. My rule of thumb, try to keep the automated posts to around 1 for every 3-5 real posts you send. And remember to reply to people. You can't expect people to interact with you if you don't interact with them. Follow me on Twitter.

This relatively new retirement savings option, which first became available on January 1, 2006, combines features of both a traditional 401(k) plan and a Roth IRA. Like a Roth IRA, contributions are made on a post-tax basis and qualified withdrawals taken during retirement are completely tax free. (With a traditional 401(k), contributions are pretax and withdrawals taken during retirement are taxed as ordinary income.) And like a traditional 401(k), the Roth 401(k) has no income restrictions if your employer offers it, you're eligible. (For more details, read our story, "Introducing the Roth 401(k).")

"The change that will probably raise the most eyebrows is that SOHO is no longer available for free download. You can purchase the two CD set of the Deluxe version from the Vector Linux CD Store for US$24.99 or download it from MadTux for $19.99. The single CD basic version is only available from MadTux at $14.99. I should point out that all the packages which make up SOHO Deluxe (with the sole exception of themes and artwork) are in the Vector Linux repositories and it is certainly possible to start with the free Standard version, do all the package upgrades and add all the missing packages to roll your own SOHO. There are also no license restrictions and there is no EULA as is found on most paid distros."

Stephan Schulz writes "Today, the CADE ATP System Competition will pit about 20 of the worlds most powerful mechanical mathematicians against each other â and for the first time they can win not only honour, but a monetary prize. The systems will reason against the clock on tasks ranging from undergraduate math problems and Cluedo-like puzzles to figuring out the possible responsibility for terrorist attacks from giant knowledge bases. If you think that is not impressive enough, they are doing it at a rate of 12 problems per hour, all day long. The competition starts at 10 a.m. in Sydney, Australia, which is midnight UTC. Live results will be available at the competition page. Bakasama writes "Tom's Hardware compared the power performance of several available SSD cards with a Rotating HDD that was chosen specifically for its poor power efficiency. The results seem to fly in the face of current wisdom. 'Flash-based solid state drives (SSDs) are considered to be the future of performance hard drives, and everyone seems to be jumping on the bandwagon. We are no exception, as we have been publishing many articles on flash-based SSDs during the last few months, emphasizing the performance gains and the potential power savings brought by flash memory. And there is nothing wrong with this, since SLC flash SSDs easily outperform conventional hard drives today (SLC = single level cell). However, we have discovered that the power savings aren't there: in fact, battery runtimes actually decrease if you use a flash SSD.

Dekortage writes "If you watch the Olympics gymnastics this year, you may be confused by the new scoring system which will let athletes score 14, 17, or even higher. The new rules are 'heavy on math' and employ two panels of judges: one for technical difficulty, which adds points up from a score of zero; the other for execution and technique, which starts at 10.0 and subtracts for errors. The two numbers are then combined for the final score. As one judge put it, 'The system rewards difficulty. But the mistakes are also more costly.' The new rules were adopted after South Korea protested a scoring at the 2004 Olympics." Now I'm sure that no Slashdot reader will intentionally watch any "sport" that has judges determine the winner, but their wives/girlfriends might seize control of the remote because they want to know who is the best at tha

Firebrand Training warns SMEs are making it easy for hackers - SMEs are endangering critical corporate information because they are failing to adequately secure their wireless networks. Failure to change preset simple âadminâ security settings, or choosing easy-to-crack passwords and allowing the network to be visible to potential attackers are the three most common mistakes made by small and medium businesses with their wireless setup. Firebrand Training is urging SMEs to take a more proactive approach to their wireless security â and they say it is by learning the tricks used by hackers that they will stay one step ahead of potential attacks. Justifying an enterprise architecture (EA) tools investment continues to be a problem â particularly when compared with just using Microsoft Visio. So what are the alternatives for inexpensive EA tooling? We investigated five scenarios that can provide a lightweight- or limited-coverage EA tool solution, and we found that the cheapest open source solutions today are very limited and only the more expensive solutions deliver EA value. Free downloads â such as TIBCO Software's Business Studio, which has free business process (BP) analysis for a single user â provide some interesting partial solutions. So, are there cheap EA tool solutions? Yes; but architects must understand their limitations from the beginning because migrating to a different EA tool midcourse is often very painful.
