Over at Genetic Future, Daniel MacArthur discusses the recent Lao paper from Current Biology that genotyped 2,514 people from 23 different European subpopulations. The researchers looked at 300,000 genetic markers and constructed a genetic map -- one that MacArthur says can nearly tell you your postcode. "The accuracy of the map will have been limited by the fact that the markers used in this study represent sites of common variation; data from large-scale genome sequencing will generate far, far better maps," writes MacArthur.

Death Metal Maniac brings us a story from the New York Times about a team of scientists who were able to relate genetic differences to geographical origins. Countries such as Germany, Austria, and France occupy the central area of the genetic map, with Italy, Finland, and the UK being relative outliers. Quoting: "All the populations are quite similar, but the differences are sufficient that it should be possible to devise a forensic test to tell which country in Europe an individual probably comes from, said Manfred Kayser, a geneticist at the Erasmus University Medical Center in the Netherlands. ... Genomic sites that carry the strongest signal of variation among populations may be those influenced by evolutionary change, Dr. Kayser said. Of the 100 strongest sites, 17 are found in the region of the genome that confers lactose tolerance,

Scientists from the University of Queensland, Australia and Applied Biosystems Inc. have teamed together to conduct the most comprehensive analysis to date of a mammalian transcriptome, the vast collection of RNAs transcribed from a mouse genome. RNA expression analysis data from this study represents the highest-resolution view of mammalian transcriptomes derived from both differentiated cells and stem cells. Results of this study are expected to help researchers to understand more fully the complexity of the genomic landscape of mammals. The study, published in the July 2008 issue of the journal Nature Methods, was also discussed at the International Congress of Genetics (ICG) meeting which took place on 12-17 July.
