Column: Fire Flower #51

The DS was Nintendo’s biggest gamble in years: up against the PSP which is a much more powerful multimedia machine, the DS was expected by the industry to be an out and out failure. Even the company pitched it as the “Third Pillar” alongside the Game Boy Advance and the GameCube. It was supposed to be another string to the bow and a kind of stop gap between the GBA and the Game Boy Next, or Game Boy Evolution, or the Game Boy Revolution or even the Game Boy Superior. Whatever. The fact is that Nintendo could not have anticipated the success of the machine – its flagship title was a rehash of a game that was released as a system seller on another machine. Ridiculous.

That Would Explain the Zebra Fish Boom in Home Aquariums

Hey, zebra fish researchers: you've got a new set of admirers. The New York Times offers this Q&A with biologist Steven Farber, who in his spare time heads up a nonprofit group that brings zebra fish to inner-city classrooms in an attempt to teach kids about genetics and the scientific approach in general. Farber says the seven-year-old organization has been successful in capturing children's attention, and that zebra fish in particular have got kids "hooked." Recalling the first time he tried this, he says, "I was able to show live fish embryos. The kids could see organs forming. ... Afterward, the children said it was the best part of their day."

Rock, Paper, Shotgun is running a feature discussing the state of game audio in today's market, discussing how far it has come, and where it's going. "Games present some unusual problems, like the mix having to adjust itself to suit a situation created by the player, rather than the static vision of a single director. Game designers have to have a flexible attitude towards factors such as the amount of time spent listening to the same piece of music and the potential for sonic overlo

River Damming Leads To Dramatic Decline In Native Fish Numbers

Damming of the Colorado River over the last century, alongside introduction of game fish species, has led to an extensive decline in numbers of native fish* whilst introduced species have flourished.
