This book covers many different aspects of protein modeling and is just one volume in an extremely large series (over 500 volumes published or planned). It contains 19 chapters, which are organized into six parts: (I) Methodology, (II) Free Energy Calculations, (III) Molecular Modeling of Membrane Proteins, (IV) Protein Structure Determination, (V) Conformational Change, and (VI) Applications to Drug Design. The main weakness of the book, as is frequently true for such edited volumes, is that the quality of the individual chapters is quite uneven. Some aspects of molecular modeling of proteins are quite well covered, whereas others are covered too briefly, with many important aspects being completely absent.

(Nanowerk Spotlight) Elastomeric (i.e. elastic) proteins are able to withstand significant deformations without rupture before returning to their original state when the stress is removed. Consequently, these proteins confer excellent mechanical properties to many biological tissues and biomaterials. Depending on the role performed by the tissue or biomaterial, elastomeric proteins can behave either as springs or shock absorbers. Recent scientific work in Canada resulted in the engineering of the first artificial chameleon elastomeric proteins that mimic and combine these two different behaviors into one protein. Under the regulation of a molecular regulator, these designer proteins exhibit one of the two distinct mechanical behaviors – spring or shock absorber – which closely mimic the two extreme behaviors observed in naturally occu

Movies movies movies... we all love a good show, but the lovely MPAA is up to some pretty strange shenanigans to ensure that you get to see some shows just once—until they're out on DVD at least. The fab guys at the Motion Picture Association of America are petitioning the FCC on behalf of some major movie studios to close the "analog hole" that may allow people to record movies broadcast on cable before they hit DVD. "The Petitioners' theatrical movies are too valuable in this early distribution window to risk their exposure to unauthorized copying" runs the argument, and is why the MPAA wants "selectable output control" (SOC) enabled on some cable box outputs.

(Nanowerk News) Not a day passes when we don’t get a little bit older. However, the exact processes involved in human aging are still puzzling. Scientists working with Lenhard Rudolph and Hong Jiang from the Max Planck Research Group for Stem Cell Aging in Ulm have now identified a group of proteins that reveal the biological age of a person. These biomarkers could be used in medicine to adapt therapies for older people to their individual biological age ("Proteins induced by telomere dysfunction and DNA damage represent biomarkers of human aging and disease").

The alignment of membrane proteins provides pertinent structural and dynamic information. Structural topology data gleaned from such studies can be used to determine the functional mechanisms associated with a wide variety of integral membrane proteins. In this communication, we successfully demonstrate, for the first time, the determination of the structural topology and helical tilt of an antimicrobial peptide magainin 2 using aligned X-band spin-label EPR spectroscopic techniques. This novel comparison unlocks many possibilities utilizing EPR spectroscopy to probe antimicrobial peptide topologies with increased sensitivity and may also give further clues to elucidate their corresponding mechanisms.

The SEO experts and Web designer professionals are getting the hot problem for optimizing the flash related websites. Flash movies and intros are frightening for SEO specialists. The reason is the spiders will not crawl the flash movies and search engines will not crawl the flash related sites. Of course search engines are start indexing the flash movies if contain the plain text, this is just incompetent way for optimization of flash sites.

Humans express several proteins that breakdown the synthetic chemicals and drugs (collectively known as xenobiotics) that we ingest or are administered. Expression of these proteins is itself regulated by the xenobiotic-sensing proteins PXR and CAR. Developing animal models to determine the relative importance of PXR and CAR for humans to breakdown a specific drug has been difficult because the human and animal proteins sense different xenobiotics.
