BBC to Launch News & Sport Apps for iPhone

When it comes to apps the iPhone is most definitely king (for the moment at least) and from those apps news and urrent affirs are a big draw. Indeed there are many popular apps that serve up news including the much praised apps from the New York Times and the Guardian. However, there has been one news organisation conspicously absent from Apple's app store; the biggest news organisation in the world ... the BBC. Well all that is set to change after the Beeb announced at MWC in Barcelona that they have two apps soon to launch, a news app and a separate sports app. You can check out an interesting interactive demo of the news app on the BBC website and I must say that it looks pretty swish. Print, photos and video are blended together and the interface, whilst perhaps a little cluttered looking, looks functional.

Gene discovery may have profound impact

British researchers have identified a gene variant that may be linked to ageing. The discovery of the gene could allow doctors to make an early diagnosis of people who are prone to ageing more rapidly than usual, so they can prescribe courses of treatment that will allow such persons to extend their life by avoiding certain health risks and taking certain medicines.

Few Americans are turning to their favorite TV anchor or their preferred daily newspaper as their primary source of news these days. Instead, most are "grazing" -- that is, gathering their news from a variety of channels. Increasingly, they are turning to the Web, accessing news aggregation platforms and news organization Web sites. Mobile devices have become important news access points as well.

Consumers 'Graze' News Online

Online news is gaining and is in third place among consumers, after TV news but ahead of print and radio. The news survey by the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project and the Project for Excellence in Journalism found that consumers prefer customized and participatory news. Social networks and e-mail are popular news tools.

Cancer: "Primitive" Gene Discovered Researchers Prove Cancer Gene In Ancestral Metazoan

To find the causes for cancer, biochemists and developmental biologists at the University of Innsbruck, Austria, retraced the function of an important human cancer gene 600 million years back in time. For the first time, they have identified the oncogene myc in a fresh water polyp and they have shown that this oncogene has similar biochemical functions in ancestral metazoan and in humans. The scientists published their findings in PNAS.

Google: Online news isa labor time activity

Hal Varian, Chief Economist for Google, says, “online news reading is predominately a labor time activity while offline news reading is primarily a leisure time activity. One of the big challenges facing the news industry is increasing involvement with the news during leisure hours, when readers have more time to look at both news content and ads.”
