shadeshope writes "Slowly but surely Google has taken over my computing life. How can I back it up? Bit by bit with their mantra, hip image and brilliant services. Google has gained my trust and all my data. I am doing almost all of my computing in the cloud. Google Reader, Calender, Email, Docs and Notes have become my tools of choice. Even to the point where my day book, research notes etc are all on Google's servers. It was just so easy, enabling me to effortlessly work from multiple computers, operating systems and locations. I know, I know, this is foolish — all my eggs are firmly in one basket. It has crept up on me. As a long-time computer user, and committed pessimist, I have used many schemes over the years to ensure my data is safe.

An anonymous reader writes "I have my own domain, which has its own email server, where I receive all my personal email. I've been getting about 800 emails a day, of which perhaps 20 are real. Suddenly, Sunday or Monday evening, the spam pretty much stopped. My volume of mail has plummeted to less than 100 a day, and as far as I can tell, I'm not missing any real mail — I'm still getting the email list subscriptions I'm expecting, and every time I ask someone to send me a test message, it gets through. My domain host insists that it doesn't do any spam filtering before mail gets to my inbox, and that they've changed nothing about their configuration. I run SpamAssassin on my server to mark, but not delete, spam, and download the whole mess to my home client, and I'm still seeing the occasional message tagged by SpamAssassin.

To me, good horror is about tension rather than simply grossing out the audience. A great horror game puts me on edge, makes me grit my teeth, and prompts me to lean with my character as I try to physically will the in-game camera to give me a slightly better view around an upcoming dark corner. Plenty of survival-horror games get this right, and plenty do it to the extent that I have to take breaks when the tension rides too high for too long rather than hitting me in more manageable bursts. So I’m really looking for two things: A game that instills tension, and one that maintains a pace that allows me to regain some level of comfort -- which in turn makes it a whole hell of a lot scarier the next time the tension rises.

We're all friends here, right? Well, I have a confession to make: I'm a shoe-aholic (I may have mentioned this in the past). I think it dates back to my college days (all 8 years of them), when I was working my way through school at a "big box sporting goods" retailer (no names mentioned to protect the innocent). Unfortunately for me, shoes are one of the college habits that I have proven unable to break ... curses Nike, Adidas, Converse, and Puma!! (Christmas Hint for my Faithful: those are my brands of choice, I wear a 12, and like the retro vibe) Well, one thing has led to another, with my addiction for shoes leading to an addiction to eBay (EBAY: View sentiment for EBAYsentiment, chart, options) . "Call me a wimp, but my time with Resident Evil 5 in Capcom's press room left me with a chill down my spine. It wasn't a fear of grotesque monster-infested loonies running rampid that got to me, it was the giant freak with a chainsaw and bag over his face that ripped my partner in half that really left an impression. Even though it scared the living hell out of me, it left me wanting more, way more."

BACK in 2002, before the $3 billion Human Genome Project was even complete, some biologists began to talk of sequencing the entire genome of any individual for just $1000. While DNA sequencing is getting ever cheaper and faster, we are not quite there yet: about a tenth of the human genome remains impossible to sequence with existing methods.

Well, it's been three months since I adopted Ruby and Dolly Parton and despite a few mishaps—a little pee on the bed, my ceramic Buddha no longer has a head and the bottoms of my dresses now have a kind of "de-constructed" look—things have gone swimmingly. I love these cats and I can't imagine my life without them. What I can imagine my life without is the smell of their litter boxes in my not-very-big apartment. We've tried all kinds of litter. The natural ones smell within an hour and the chemical ones don't smell, but scare me (some are made with known carcinogens. No, no, no.). Because I can't literally be manning the box after every visit, and because I equally don't love the scent when I get home, I really don't know what to do. I've heard good things about the Litter Robot, which waits seven minutes after your cat leaves the bo

Two years ago, I decided to take on the venture of selling rare books online. My vision was to have people logging on and buying my books by the dozen. Sadly, my vision was replaced by the realization that it was not as easy as I anticipated. In trying to increase my sales, I learned several things along the way.

A friend of mine, this past week, called me on my cell to give me a bad news. "I lost my job," she told me. "What?" I asked. "Yes, the boss called me this morning to inform that the company no longer needs my services. Now I am without a job," she said.

In Reading on Saturday one of my guys came up to me and said there was a guy that wanted to talk with me. I have to be honest I had just been out in my pit running around for what seemed like a couple of hours so I really just wanted a little break. I was trying to get into race mode. I had my fire suit on and we weren’t really qualified really well. I just wasn’t really in a good frame of mind. My guys said they thought I’d want to talk with this person so they brought him into my pit.

Computerworld — As I write this, my new white 16GB iPhone 3G is in the process of syncing about 10GB of music from my iTunes library. This is my second sync. Although I was one of the lucky ones able to both buy and eventually activate an iPhone 3G on Friday, I at first opted to copy over the same paltry 2GB of music that was stored on my first-generation 4GB iPhone along with my e-mail accounts and a handful of applications from the App Store. Having waited close to four hours in line at a New York AT&T store, close to 20 minutes for the purchase process, and another four-plus hours attempting to activate my iPhone at home via iTunes, I simply couldn't wait for a full sync before putting my iPhone through its paces.

zorro6 writes "I thought this might be an interesting question/topic and it would sure help me to get some kind of answer. I recently got internet service from a small, local wireless ISP in my area (south central Colorado, USA). The strange thing is that many, many web sites think I am in Quebec, Canada when I use the service. Evidently some geolocation service thinks my IP address indicates I am in Canada. I have checked the obvious. The WHOIS information for my IP correctly indicates a location of Durango, CO. So the bad info is coming from some more sophisticated geolocation service. My ISP is at a loss as to how to fix this but it is causing me a lot of grief. Many of the ads I get shown on Yahoo! for instance are in French! Certain sites won't sell me goods or services because they don't do business in Canada.

Some biologists hope that it will be possible to sequence the entire genome of any individual. While DNA sequencing is progressing fast, a tenth of the human genome remains impossible to sequence with existing methods. This obstacle has not discouraged companies from commercialising their DNA research. 23andMe and deCodeMe offer clients a personal DNA read-outs for about $US1,000. In April 2008, Navigenics launched a similar package for $US2,500 and a yearly fee of $US250. The package includes access to "genetic counsellors" and the storage of one's DNA until it can be re-analysed as the technology improves

If you read my introductory blog then you all know I work a variety of jobs. With this economy everyone is turning into “Hey Mon” from In Living Color. For the most part, I try my hardest to keep the jobs as separate as possible, but sometimes they intertwine thanks to a little thing called the Internet. Not to tell my age (then again you already know lol), but does anyone remember when there wasn’t an Internet? Don’t get me wrong, the Web has been an absolute blessing for me; there is no better tool for mass self-promotion. However, it does get a little odd when people you work with come up to you and say I “googled” you today. How do you respond to that? I know some people as soon as they meet someone they immediately look them up on the Internet and then they get upset about what they did or did not find out.

The problem is that I used my laptop during my periods of feverish deliriousness, contaminating my shiny 15" MacBook Pro with the icky influenza virus. I am asking my fellow Slashdotters if they have ever sought out a good way of disinfecting their lucky laptops after an illness. Do you use soap? A light acid bath? "The response I got from this particular blogger was scathing. Of particular note was the issue of me referring to Microsoft Windows as a "ball and chain". The famed blogger stated to me that they did their absolute best to undo the "damage" my blog and my attitude does at every turn...or words to that effect. Said blogger also stated that they had nothing but the deepest distain for my fanaticism and that they worked hard to be the exact opposite of me, which they then identified as "zealot"."

There are two things I'm kind of bad at: drinking water and taking my vitamins. I know that both are very important because they give you energy and make you look and feel healthy, but I still have a hard time consuming them on a regular basis. That's where 4C Totally Light 2Go Vitamin Stix come in. I have to admit I was skeptical about these little packets of powder. Maybe they'd taste chalky or artificial or too fruity or not fruity enough. Turns out, they made my water taste delicious, and they are chock full of Vitamin A, B, and C as well as zinc and other antioxidants to keep me energized and keep my immune system strong. I think the best part is that they are calorie-free and sugar-free, so I am not tacking on liquid calories to my daily intake (I prefer to chew my calories because food rocks).

Yesterday was the official launch of the 2008 Women in Arts Festival, and I find myself, as I found myself at this time last year and the year before, planning my schedule for the next four days with a mixture of anticipatory cringing and warm, fuzzy optimism. Every year I pin my hopes on there being at least one good party where I can expect to shake my ass without having it fondled by some beer-fuelled, ass-grabbing automaton, one mediocre art exhibition that I can spit upon with my elitist art-critic supper club and one jovial public penis-hating session at Constitution Hill to which I can bring my guitar and my dildo.

tambo writes with the sort of problem more people wish they had: "I've just bought myself an excellent LCD TV. I'd love to be able to access my home server from it for many reasons (music, video, surfing, MAME, etc.) — but my home server is in another room, 30 feet away from the TV and 50 feet away from the couch. I've acquired some gear to send PC audio and video wirelessly (over the 5.8GHz range), so that's all good. My challenge now is trying to send input wirelessly to my PC from fifty feet away. I've thought about getting a wireless USB hub, but that would introduce an additional wireless hop that would probably add to the input latency (and might interfere with all the other wireless gear in my pad.) My best bet now is to get a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse that have an unusually good range, and some of the Logitechs seem to qualif

Fools Gold was a pleasant surprise. There, I said it. I had to do some soul searching and life evaluating to write this review. Thats what this movie did for me. Well, not the movie itself, its not THAT kind of good. Its fun good. Its entertaining good. Its good enough to make me wonder if a fluffy romantic comedy flick now and then wouldnt be such a drain of my precious time. The conclusion, Fools Gold didnt make me want to go find a mad scientist, invent a time machine, and go get those 2 hours of my life back, no. Thats a compliment folks, just in case you are not following my train of thought here..
