Insecticides Or Genetically Modified Crops? Non-Target Insects Affected More By Insecticides Than By Crops Engineered To Make Insect-specific Toxins

Non-target insects are probably affected more by conventional insecticides than by crops that contain genes from the soil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), according to the findings of a study by Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists and cooperators.

Support Encryption in 40% More Applications Best-in-Class companies support encryption in about 40% more applications, with about 11.5x more encryption keys under management Read More...

Although data access and data protection often seem incompatible with one another, Aberdeen's research shows that Best-in-Class companies have successfully managed encryption to achieve both data access and data protection to a higher degree than their Industry Average and Laggard counterparts. Compared to a year ago, they have successfully deployed and managed encryption technologies to reduce data loss / data exposure incidents by 4%, and to reduce audit deficiencies related to data protection by 7%. Compared to all others in the study, they currently support encryption in about 40% more applications, with about 11.5-times more encryption keys under management. Most importantly, they have done so at a significantly lower total cost: 10% less in absolute terms; 36% less in terms of average cost per encryption-enabled application; and 92%

Patenting the "Climate Genes" ...and Capturing the Climate Agenda

Issue: The world’s largest seed and agrochemical corporations are stockpiling hundreds of monopoly patents on genes in plants that the companies will market as crops genetically engineered to withstand environmental stresses such as drought, heat, cold, floods, saline soils, and more. BASF, Monsanto, Bayer, Syngenta, Dupont and biotech partners have filed 532 patent documents (a total of 55 patent families) on so-called “climate ready” genes at patent offices around the world. In the face of climate chaos and a deepening world food crisis, the Gene Giants are gearing up for a PR offensive to re-brand themselves as climate saviours. The focus on so-called climate-ready genes is a golden opportunity to push genetically engineered crops as a silver bullet solution to climate change.

Study: Google uses 21 times more bandwidth than it pays for

Some of us burn up more of the Internet's bandwidth than others. Take Google. The search giant consumes far more of the Internet's traffic lanes than it actually pays for. That's the conclusion of a provocative study released by tech industry analyst Scott Cleland. In fact, the analysis shows Google is by far the largest user of Internet bandwidth, and that Google's bandwidth use is orders of magnitude greater than its payments for its cost.

Valuable Objects Stimulate Brain More Than Junk

Roland Piquepaille writes "According to researchers at the University of California at San Diego, visual areas of our brain respond more to valuable objects than other ones. In other words, our brain has stronger reactions when we see a diamond ring than we look at junk. Similarly, our brain vision areas are more excited by a Ferrari than, say, a Tata new Nano car. In this holiday season, I'm sure you've received gifts that excited your brain — and others that you already want to resell on an auction site."

Anyone Besides Zune Owners With New Year's Crashes?

aputerguy writes "My Fedora 8 Linux server crashed sometime between 18:59:40 EST (GMT -5:00) and 19:00:00 EST (GMT -5:00) on Dec 31, 2008 which remarkably corresponds to within at most 20 seconds of the New Year in GMT. I have been running this same hardware non-stop for more than six years and other than the occasional reboot for kernel (or distro) upgrades, it has not crashed more than 1 or 2 times in 2237 days of cumulative uptime. Nothing other than background processes were running at the time of the crash. Could this be a coincidence or was there some 2008/2009 rollover issue going on here? Has anyone (other than Zune 30GB owners) noticed similar year-end issues with their computers or electronic devices?"

Drivers Are Distracted More by Cell Phones than by Passengers

Drivers are far more distracted by talking on a cellular phone than by conversing with a passenger in an automobile, according to a new study by University of Utah psychologists. The study, which used a sophisticated driving simulator, found that when drivers talk on a cell phone, they drift out of their lanes and missed exits more frequently than drivers conversing with a passenger.

Genetically Modified Plants Could Yield More Biofuel

Plants, genetically modified to ease the breaking down of their woody material, could be the key to a cheaper and greener way of making ethanol, according to researchers who add that the approach could also help turn agricultural waste into food for livestock.

President and CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo said at the opening of Nokia World 2008.

This is a world where you will have the power to tailor and personalize your Internet how and when you like, to make your day-to-day life easier and more fulfilling.” Kallasvuo noted that Nokia, with more than one billion customers globally, has the opportunity to put the power of the Internet into the hands of more people in more places than any other company, “and that’s what we intend to do.”
