Although data access and data protection often seem incompatible with one another, Aberdeen's research shows that Best-in-Class companies have successfully managed encryption to achieve both data access and data protection to a higher degree than their Industry Average and Laggard counterparts. Compared to a year ago, they have successfully deployed and managed encryption technologies to reduce data loss / data exposure incidents by 4%, and to reduce audit deficiencies related to data protection by 7%. Compared to all others in the study, they currently support encryption in about 40% more applications, with about 11.5-times more encryption keys under management. Most importantly, they have done so at a significantly lower total cost: 10% less in absolute terms; 36% less in terms of average cost per encryption-enabled application; and 92%

During the 2006 World Cup, Brazilian soccer star Ronaldinho made some headlines after his poor performance in the quarterfinal, when Brazil lost to France, was blamed on all-night sessions of sex and PS2 games. Supposedly his game of choice was EA Sports' FIFA 2006 soccer game, so it's slightly amusing to see an opposing goalkeeper credit a save he made on a Ronaldinho free kick last weekend to playing soccer games on his PlayStation. The goalie says that the game features a solid replication of Ronaldinho's penalty-taking style, giving him an idea of how to react in real life. As games become more and more realistic, more and more athletes and teams might start using them as scouting tools. Indeed, another soccer team recently signed a deal with the developer of a management simulation game to get exclusive access to its full database in

A recent lawsuit sheds even more light on just how poor quality control is at the US Patent & Trademark Office. The lawsuit specifically was over the firing of a quality assurance specialist, who's supposed to review patent examiner decisions to determine if errors were made in granting or rejecting claims. The guy was fired after it turned out that a random review showed his reviews erred 35% of the time. The guy complained that it was just a random sample rather than looking across his entire body of work, but that's not all that interesting here. What's more interesting is that apparently the "reasonable" cutoff for such QA specialists is a 25% error rate. Considering that their entire job is supposed to be double checking the work of patent examiners, you would think that getting one in four claims reviewed wrong would be ringing some

BEIJING (AFP) - China now has more than 50 million bloggers as increasing numbers of people seek an outlet for their views, state press reported. The number, reached by the end of November, compared to a blogging population of about 47 million a year earlier, according to Xinhua news agency, quoting figures from the Internet Society of China. The group said there were 100 million blogs, or personal online journals, in China, meaning many people are keeping more than one. "More and more Chinese want to express their own views about local and international events through the Internet," Gao Lulin, the group's deputy head, was quoted as saying. The Internet Society of China represents firms in the industry such as service providers and network access carriers, as well as research institutes.

Google announced an initiative to help bring more magazine archives and current magazines online, partnering with publishers to begin digitizing articles from New York Magazine, Popular Mechanics, and Ebony. Users can now search for magazines through Google Book Search and can read an article in full color and in its original context, just as they would in the printed magazine. They can also click on "Browse all issues" to view issues from across the decades. Over time, as Google scans more articles, users will see more and more magazines appear in Google Book Search results. Eventually, Google will begin blending magazine results into Google.com search results.

ruphus13 writes "Alan Cox — one of the lead Linux kernel developers at Red Hat — is leaving the company after 10 years and is heading to Intel, where he can focus on more low-level development tasks. There is speculation if this is indicative of a shift to a more 'application-centric' vision at Red Hat. From the article: 'Red Hat is integrating more application related, user- and enterprise-centric tools into its well-established "low-level," "core" development and support tools. It'd be more worrisome if Red Hat neglected to strike out in this direction. Cox was with Red Hat for ten years, and regardless of any suspected change of course within the company, that's a fair amount of time.'"

NokiaNokia E71 review at LetsGoMobile : The time a business mobile phone was simple and boring is in the past. Business and private are being united. The genuine corporate mobile companies such as the BlackBerry creators, aim more and more at the private user, whilst Samsung and Nokia in turn serve the business user. Nokia serves the business user with their E-series. In addition to the E66, Nokia has introduced the E71. Nokia business phones have a neat design and feature many functionalities. That's the reason more and more private phone users end up going for a business phone.
