Skyrocketing fuel costs could lead to long-term sustainable fisheries if governments redirect fuel subsidies currently given to fishing fleets and use them to invest in re-training for fishers, says University of British Columbia fisheries economist Rashid Sumaila.

Researchers Discover The Gene That Can Cause SuicideThe Researchers that discovered a connection of some specific genes with suicide, affirmed that this research can help in development of effective treatments for many mental disorders. The group of researchers led by Michael Poulter of the Robarts Research Institute at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ont. and Hymie Anisman of Carleton's Neuroscience Research Institute at Carleton University in Ottawa, compared the brains of people who committed suicide with the brain of people who died from heart attacks or natural causes. Researchers discovered the proteins that can chemically modify DNA directly. The study showed the presence of high quantity of a particular protein in the brains of people who committed suicide.

Researchers have combined the efforts of two kinds of bacteria to produce hydrogen in a bioreactor, with the product from one providing food for the other. According to an article in the August issue of Microbiology Today, this technology has an added bonus: leftover enzymes can be used to scavenge precious metals from spent automotive catalysts to help make fuel cells that convert hydrogen into energy.

An anonymous reader writes "A group of researchers from the University of Colorado and University of Washington could face both civil and criminal penalties for a research project (pdf) in which they snooped on users of the Tor anonymous proxy network. Should federal prosecutors take interest in the project, the researchers could also face up to 5 years in jail for violating the Wiretap Act.The researchers neither sought legal review of the project nor ran it past their Institutional Review Board. The Electronic Frontier Foundation, which has written a legal guide for Tor admins, strongly advises against any sort of network monitoring."

The region remains one of the staunchest advocates of fuel cells as an alternative power source. According to the Bureau of Energy at the Taiwan Ministry of Economic Affairs, annual output value of fuel cells on the island is projected to reach $130 million by 2011, and will hit $424 million by 2016. The Bureau also forecasts that Taiwan will claim 5 percent of the worldwide market for fuel cells by 2020, with output value to reach nearly $3.26 billion.

Biofuels are portable energy sources that are compatible with the infrastructure in place for petroleum-based transportation, so they are appealing alternatives to fossil fuels. In terms of large scale production and contribution of greenhouse gases, fuels from cellulosic biomass like grasses and wood residues are superior to sugar—or starch-based alternatives. To convert cellulosic biomass into fuel, however, the raw material must be broken down into the component sugars, which are then converted into biofuels by fermentation. Since the need for biofuels has only become apparent recently, this conversion process isn't optimized. A paper that will appear in Nature today argues that understanding the genomes of the organisms involved will allow scientists to engineer both better plant feedstocks and superior fuel-producing microorganisms

A recently discovered patent of Canon’s shows that the company is looking towards developing fuel cell technologies for its Digital SLR cameras. The patent is a bit long winded, as are most, but it appears that there would be a main compartment on such a DSLR that would contain the hydrogen fuel and it would feed this fuel to other parts of the camera. Independent power generation would then take place in parts like the lens attachment, the flash, and the main camera body, although a unified power monitoring system would be in place to increase power efficiency.

Kotaku writes: "The only thing better than original master recordings in a rhythm game is having the original artists go back and do the whole thing over again, and Guitar Hero: World Tour is boasting three separate re-recordings on its set list when the game hits store shelves. In addition to The Sex Pistols' "Pretty Vacant" and Motorhead's "Overkill", MC5 guitarist Wayne Kramer has recruited a little help and hit the studio to re-record the classic "Kick Out the Jams". The new recording uses the original vocals from singer Rob Tyner from 1968, with Kramer, Alice in Chains (the press release says Alice "and" Chains) guitarist Jerry Cantrell and former Guns 'N' Roses guitarist Gilby Clarke."
