BioScience Reviews Biology Books for Young People: related news

BioScience Reviews Biology Books for Young People

BioScience, the flagship publication of the American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS), announces its Fall Focus on Books, this year featuring over 40 children's biology titles. Six engaging articles, written by science educators, will be of special interest to K–12 educators, parents, and caregivers who seek an enjoyable learning experience for children interested in science and nature. Titles are grouped by topic—Botany, Oceanography, Climate Change, Evolution, Microbiology, and Entomology.

Which Computer Books For Prisoners?

Brian D. writes "I've recently begun working with a group that sends books to prisoners in federal and state prisons. We try to match their requests as well as we can. One request that we consistently have trouble filling is for computer books. This is not for lack of books, but because the prisoners' requests tend to be vague and their computer resources are obviously severely limited. Keep in mind that we send prisoners all types of books — from gardening and landscaping to cooking and sailing — about topics they don't have the resources to experiment with. With basically one shelf devoted to books on computing, what types of books should I tell them we should keep? What are the best types of books to send a prisoner who requests a book on 'computer repair?'"

Blogger: Connect with young Jews

As the founder of Jewlicious.com, a blog and Web site that caters to young Jewish people, David Abitbol was an obvious choice for the panel of Monday's General Assembly session, "Social Entrepreneurship: Reinvigorating the Jewish People for the 21st Century." However, Abitbol believes the organized North American Jewish community is actually not in tune with what's going on in the lives of young Jewish people.

Unhappy People Watch More TV

Hugh Pickens writes "A new study by sociologists at the University of Maryland concludes that unhappy people watch more TV, while people who describe themselves as 'very happy' spend more time reading and socializing. 'TV doesn't really seem to satisfy people over the long haul the way that social involvement or reading a newspaper does,' says researcher John P. Robinson. 'It's more passive and may provide escape — especially when the news is as depressing as the economy itself. The data suggest to us that the TV habit may offer short-run pleasure at the expense of long-term malaise.' Unhappy people also liked their TV more: 'What viewers seem to be saying is that while TV in general is a waste of time and not particularly enjoyable, "the shows I saw tonight were pretty good.

Interviewing Experienced IT People?

thricenightly writes "After more than 20 years in IT I've learned that the most valuable people in a team are frequently the old timers. Young pups straight out of college might (think they) know all the latest buzzwords and techniques, but in the real world, where getting working products delivered on time and on budget is of paramount importance, people who have been doing the job for a decade or two tend to be the people I'd rather be working alongside. I've recently been elevated to a position where I get to interview and choose those who get hired in my department. Although I'm very much focused on choosing the right person for the role regardless of age, experience or whatever, it's probably fair to say the more mature applicants will get a more sympathetic hearing from me than they might from most other interviewers for IT roles.

Our Love/Hate Relationship with Systems Biology

Derek Lowe has a post at In the Pipeline on systems biology, which he defines in broad strokes as "trying to model the interactions of whole biological systems, in an attempt to come up with come explanatory power." Lowe says the sheer complexity of biological systems means that scientists are likely to be constrained by available technology, compute power, and other hindrances. "My first test for listening to systems biology people is whether they approach things with the proper humility," he writes. But he adds that the potential payoff of this approach is significant, and that it needs to be pursued. "So press on, systems people, and good luck," he concludes.

Theatre Gigante, a performing arts organization from Milwaukee and in partnership with Slovenian dancers, produced an enriching cultural program that is possible with cooperation between the people of the United States and the people of Slovenia. On October 19, the most acclaimed contemporary dance ensemble in Slovenia performed in front of the Slovene first lady and U.S. Ambassador, choreographed in part by a Slovene-American choreographer, Isabelle Kralj. The event, the 8th Gala Ballet Evening, was hosted at he cultural and congress center Cankarjev dom. Kralj, the only American choreographer present, and in partnership with Association of Ballet Artists of Slovenia, performed a dance piece entitled “Pet Krat Ena” (Five Times One). Contemporary dance is still in a nascent phase of development in Slovenia, but there is a clear hunger

$125 Million Settlement In Authors Guild v. Google

James Gleick writes "Authors, publishers, and Google are announcing a huge settlement deal today in their lawsuits over the scanning of millions of copyrighted books in library collections. Google has agreed to a huge payout for books that were scanned without permission, but now they'll be allowed to scan the books legitimately. Most important, they'll be able to put millions of books online, including those still in copyright — not just for searching and not just in snippets. There is a groundbreaking new licensing system meant to make the books as widely available as possible while protecting the authors' copyrights and enabling them to share in the revenue. Some will differ, but personally I think this is a wonderful outcome, for readers and for authors alike.

Accessibility is more than just alt-text

I found this great article today on writing accessible Web pages: Understanding Disabilities when Designing a Website. It's great because the first thing it does is explain exactly why you want to be accessible - statistics. For instance, from their sources, if you make a site inaccessible to visually impaired people you are ignoring potentially 12 million people in the United States and the United Kingdom. And there are lots of other English-speaking countries out there that you're ignoring their visually impaired people as well. Personally, if I could get 1% of those people to come to my site every day, I would be ecstatic. If I could get 0.1% of those people to come to my site every day, I'd be really happy. I don't want to turn away customers.

Guide books get HC clean chit from copyright charges

The People's Art

Big geolgae drawings, or placards covering a large portion of a building, frequently appeared at pro-democracy rallies in the 1980s. The placards heightened the mood with strong colors and writings critical of society. They were the works of painters, known as "minjung (the peoples)" artists. The peoples art started in the early 1980s with the idea that art should not remain within the confines of museums and galleries but should also contribute to changing society. The new form of art quickly spread to rallies staged by university students, laborers and activists. Besides the geolgae drawings, a variety of experimental artworks appeared such as flag drawings and murals and print works. The focus of their endeavors was to get art closer to the lives of ordinary people.

NYC Rocker Tim Young releases free "Kerouac" MP3

"Listening to 'Keroauc' by Tim Young Band feels like a cross-country adventure that harkens back to the esteemed Beat writer Jack Kerouac, of whom the song refers to. In the song's video, Young is seen playing guitar all over the city of New York on street corners and sidewalks. Young appears to be having a blast - and rightly so. 'Kerouac' is a highly enjoyable song that will conjure up thoughts of hitting the road with only a notebook in hand, just like Jack did so many years ago."

Four years ago Google began scanning out-of-print books to add to its online index, saying it would offer parts of the book in searches. Publishers responded with a copyright infringement lawsuit. Game Makers Accusing Innocent People of Piracy in the UK

eldavojohn writes "It's a topic that a lot of game makers like Atari don't want the public hearing. Game makers wrongfully accusing clearly innocent people of piracy. From the article, 'According to Michael Coyle, an intellectual property solicitor with law firm Lawdit, more and more people are being wrongly identified as file-sharers. He is pursuing 70 cases of people who claim to be wrongly accused of piracy and has spoken to hundreds of others, he told the BBC.' If only a few are coming forward after receiving extortion letters ('Pay 500 OR ELSE!'), what's the actual number of those out there being wrongfully accused?"
