automated device genetic microfluidic organisms reduces screen small studies time
Genetic studies on small organisms such as worms and flies can now be done more quickly using a new microfluidic device developed by engineers at the Georgia Institute of Technology. The new "lab-on-a-chip" can automatically position, image, determine the phenotype of and sort small animals, such as the worm Caenorhabditis elegans, that is commonly used for biological studies. The increasing market demand for systems characterized by low-latency, deterministic behavior and the emphasis on the use of commodity hardware and software have led to a new breed of real-time operating systems (OSs), known as enterprise real-time OSs. In response to the demand for accelerated access to such features in a Linuxâ„¢ kernel, the IBM Linux and Javaâ„¢ Technology Centers collaborated to provide the first commercially available enterprise real-time Linux kernel with real-time Java support. Extending the PREEMPT RT patch from Ingo Molnar of Red Hat, Inc., the kernel contains additional features that were required to meet the demands of enterprise real-time OS customers. This paper describes how IBM developers helped to direct, implement, and test the real-time Linux kernel, bringing it from software patches to a finished produc

Last week, we reviewed the Aspire One, Acer's entry into the netbook market. The small but powerful device comes preloaded with either Linux or Windows XP, and we reviewed the Linux version. Even though most people will never need to go beyond the default Linpus Linux offering on the One, more advanced users will quickly hit the wall Acer set up: it has more or less completely locked down the Xfce 4.2.2 installation on the One. This bothered me - this is a powerful machine, so I want a powerful operating system. I went for Ubuntu 8.04.1 - read on for a few thoughts on how well GNOME's user interface fares on a small-screen device such as the One.

Running a small business can be a life-consuming process, so sometimes small-business owners miss the forest for the trees. Maybe that's why only about 16 percent of businesses with fewer than 50 employees in the United States have 401(k) plans. Small-business owners are so focused on developing their businesses that some do not realize that those assets can grow at a much faster rate for their retirement under the right plan. An October survey by ING DIRECT's ShareBuilder401k, which designs 401(k) plans for small businesses, found that "not enough employees" was the top reason cited by small-business owners as to why they do not have a 401(k) plan. That's despite the fact that even sole proprietorships with no other employees can have 401(k)s.

MojoKid writes "According to a release issued by Rocky Mountain Tracking, an 18-year old man, Shaun Malone, was able to successfully contest a speeding ticket in court using the data from a GPS device installed in his car. This wasn't just any old make-a-left-turn-100-feet-ahead-onto-Maple-Street GPS; this was a vehicle-tracking GPS device — the kind used by trucking fleets — or in this case, overprotective parents. The device was installed in Malone's car by his parents, and the press release makes no mention if the teenager knew that the device was installed in his vehicle at the time."

We have a java web application and now we have a new request: the client wants to communicate with their USB device using our application. They plug the device into their PCs, open a page of our web application and the page will communicate with the device to get some input. Of course the device must already have proper driver. Comunication here means reading some input from the device.

This paper describes an automated method for sequence-specific NMR assignment of the aliphatic resonances of protein side chains in small- and medium-sized globular proteins in aqueous solution. The method requires the recording of a five-dimensional (5D) automated projection spectroscopy (APSY-) NMR experiment and the subsequent analysis of the APSY peak list with the algorithm ALASCA (Algorithm for local and linear assignment of side chains from APSY data). The 5D APSY-HC(CC-TOCSY)CONH experiment yields 5D chemical shift correlations of aliphatic side chain C−H moieties with the backbone atoms H

EmagGeek writes "Matthey Meeds, a real-estate agent, was so irritated about having to pay the monthly rental fee that on Tuesday he filed an antitrust suit against Time Warner Cable and its 84 percent owner, Time Warner Inc. The suit alleges that, by linking the provision of premium cable services to rental of the cable box, the companies have established illegal tying arrangements. 'Time Warner's improper tying and bundling harms competition,' Meeds' lawsuit states. 'Since the class can only rent the cable box directly from Time Warner, manufacturers of cable boxes are foreclosed from renting and/or selling cable boxes directly to members of the class at a lower cost.' I pay Comcast over $25/mo for my two DVRs. I'd love to just be able to buy them or build my own.

Real-time computing is often associated with high speed, but this is only one part of the picture. At its core, real-time computing is about predictability -- the knowledge that the system will always perform within the required time frame. The deadlines involved need not be very short -- though they sometimes are -- and the consequences of missing a deadline may not be dire -- though they sometimes are. The key to whether an application is a real-time one has to do with whether its requirements include temporal constraints.

The tendency of small business to hold others responsible flies in the face of the fact that consumers associate bad experiences on a site directly with the merchant, regardless of fault. This reveals a worrying disconnect between the retailer's perceptions and their customers' expectations. Additional PayPoint.net research also shows that consumers are willing to vote with their feet: just 3 per cent of online shoppers would trust a small online business with their money, preferring to shop with larger online brands. Furthermore, 81 per cent of consumers are suspicious of the security of small, unknown companies demonstrating that small online retailers have more, not less to prove.
